Internet phones

Sunrocket is another Voice Over Internet Provider (VOIP) and needs a broadband connection. I have friends who switched to Vonage who are pretty happy with the service and I am contemplating doing the same. Beats the $75 or so a month SBC charges for "unlimited local" and long distance.

had it for about a year now, it's about as dependable as the phone carriers but cheaper.

Is that Sunrocket, or Vonage?

BTW, is a cable modem required, or will this service work with DSL?

My wife and I where just talking about this. I see the Only drawback is in a Power outtage you will lose your phone. Also No cable no phone my internet goes out alteast once a month for short periods of time.

It should work fine on DSL but you usually have to have a phone line with your DSL, which makes this sort of redundant.

I use my cell for intra-US calls. For international calling I use Yahoo Instant Messenger 7.5 with Voice. Fantastic prices, excellent quality. Beats everything else I tried before, and does not require that you install a real phone anywhere (that is good in my book, as you can call from any WiFi hotspot).

I thought that too, but it's actually possible to have a dead phone line and still have an active DSL line.

Don't ask me how I know.

Yeah, that's why I said usually. I have to keep a phone line to get a good price on DSL here. By the way, if anyone is interested, you can make calls out with Skype (within the US and Canada) free through the end of the year.
