At work we have a 256 kb/s connection which feeds three desktops and three laptops, but if one of the computers downloads something from the internet even though the max speed is only 25 or even 10 kp/s on the individual download, it pretty much kills the internet on the other computers. What is going on? I realize there might not be enough information here, so ask for clarification if necessary.

Where are you getting the file download speed of 25kbps from? If its from the window that pops up in your web browser when you download something then its likely measuring the speed in bytes per second, whereas your Internet connection is measured in bits per second. There are 8 bits in a bye so 25 kilobytes per second is 200 kilobits per second, which is virtually all of your ADSL bandwidth.

Other factors that can influence it are the contention ratio (your 256k DSL bandwidth is almost certainly shared between a load of other people. Business DSL is often 20:1, home DSL is 50:1) which means if someone else youre contended with downloads something it will impact you.

Try checking your speed here with just you on and with someone else downloading at the same time. It might help identify if it is resource sharing problem or a plain resource problem.

Try Kamakazmoto's link to check speed, but trying to share an ADSL line with six computers can be asking a lot! I get upset with my kids hogging bandwidth and there are only two of us on a cable modem running on average three times your rate! You can set up your router to restrict each computer to a specific percentage of the bandwidth (or, set the others at 10% and yours at 90%) but the process depends on the router. Downloading eats bandwidth just like flushing the toilet pisses of the one taking a shower.
