Intersting Article, Part 2

Hi Mike,

Thanks again for the second post. This is about what I expected from the employees perspective about the move and the cost of living. I'll have about 2 years to make up my mind about moving to Hillsborugh, Oregon.

Hillsboro, Oregon is a suburb of Portland. The climate will be different, but the cost of housing is fairly high and the politics in the large cities fairly liberal. That sounds fairly close to California minus the weather. All that said, the area is not a bad place to live.

Thanks Mike for taking the time to post these articles. Interesting and informative reading:thumbup:.

Now if you could get over there to the Buck plant and help them get those BCCI drop-point 110s out to Larry;) :D. Preston

I could do that, but then I'd probably "lose a few" on the way to the airport! :D  :D

Hi Mike,

The location is not a big factor for me, it's green there year round and has better hunting available. I don't really like the political anti-everything climate here in CA. My wife's brother lives in Portland and that would give her the opportunity see him. The move however would change our current family situation.

We have five kids, three of them have started lives of their own:jerkit:, well make that two of them the third is trying hard to find himself. The two that are married each have two kids of their own (I'm Papajohn) :D . Our kids are so attached to their mom that they talk with her on the phone several times a day and come by the house at least once per day. You see they each bought house's a mile away from ours (we get to see the grand kids often :D ). In addition the younger two are in high school and pulling them out in their last year would really suck for them. I think I would survive the move to Oregon just fine but the rest of the family would not.

This is a good comparison to what the employees from the Buck plant had to work through. As for the Buck plant moving; the numbers speak for themselves. Chuck and CJ Buck made a very sound judgment with their decision to move. Anyone of us would have done the same if facing the same economic issues. This also gives me in site as to why my company is making the same type of decisions. Sorry enough of my rambling thoughts:eek: .

Thank you Mike, this was an interesting subject.

There's a reason it's green all the time. It rains like, well, Oregon!!!
I would consider moving to Oregon though. I like it there. Prefer the center part like Bend though...not as wet...but it snows. Us little nippers don't like that. Growin' up in Hawai's spoils ya.
Post Falls, ID seems like a cool place too. Michael and I could open up a myskin restaurant. Cracked me up that the lady in the article didn't like the peeps from Calif even though Buck created about 200 jobs there. I'd have one word for her and shopping at her establishment: "Sayonara Bitch". Make that two words.

JB,
I fully understand your dilemma. Having spent 22 years in the military, the impact on the kids and the rest of the family becomes a very sensitive issue. Their proximity as we get older becomes a larger issue still. Trust me, I know. My daughter lives in San Diego with her Navy husband and I don't get to see my grandsons nearly as often as I'd like, not to mention her and her husband. :(
Best of luck to you.
Mike

Ah heck Michael...I went to like nine diff schools as a Navy Brat in the Pacific...look how normal I turned out  :p

Sirusly, I do know whatcha mean. The reason I don't move is the keiki. Even though they are "moved out" :jerkit: as John states too.

The weather here in the Yakima Valley in central Washington is very similar to Bend and the size is similar too, although I think Bend is a cooler place. We only get about 8 inches of rain a year and about a couple of snow falls a season totalling less than a foot of the white stuff. The cost of living (housing) is MUCH less than other areas.

I thought you were in Spokane. Never been to Spokane, but Yakima is a great place. Rode down there from Canada along hi-way 97 some moons ago on the way to Calif.

I actually live about seven miles west of town about 500 feet above the valley floor.

Interesting that you left San Diego and ended up in the same general region as Buck did. You must be a wise owl.

I transferred with the Navy and eventually ended up in Bremerton, Washington when my ship, USS Texas, went in for an extended overhaul. (I was the Combat Systems Officer and also the Overhaul Manager) I retired a couple of years later and decided I liked it in the NW and applied for a masters degree program at the Univ. of Washington. When I was finished I got a job offer from Yakima County and here I am. The area grows on you and we decided to stay long term.
