Hey all,

after reading the entire moding the trail hawk post, i got the fever....
Just recieved my CS pipe hawk and will be mod'ing away, but something doesnt look right after stripping the paint...

there is what looks like an "eye" on both sides of the blade, obviously from the heat treating, but placement looks weird, not what i was expecting...

does this look right to you guys? ( i did do a little vinegar patina already)

Hi Brian, that's weird looking, I don't think it's the heat treat, looks like they ground it there but bot sides is strange. If you look the darker heat treat line is just above the shiney part. Did you clean the paint remover off the head before the vinegar soak? Could be oil. Does it look like it was ground?

Regards

Robin

Robin,

Its exactly mirrored on both sides of the blade, was apparent when I stripped the paint, just stood out a lot more prior to soaking. Definitely not ground, finish is entirely consistant.

I cleaned it with windex after striping, and let dry prior to vinegar soak.

If you've ever done any welding, it looks like the back side of a plate you just put a bead on....

I will give it a good scrubbing with the wire wheel and see if it cleans up, but I wanted to get an opinon as this definately looks heat related to me and possibly detrimental?

just noticed similar discoloration on Mr Pink's spike hawk on the 2nd to last page of the Moding the CS hawk thread, so possibly something not to be concerned about?

I've had several in the last few months. Both Spike Hawks and the Norse Hawks. Doesn't seem to want to come off no matter what you do. I'm tempted to just paint an eyeball on them so they can see where they're going.

Looks like they may have a differnt piece of steel
mixed in with there batch when the produced it, only a guess tho but could be possable.
sorry missed mr pinks one very similar very strange.
