Hello,

I am brand new to the forum. I am 40 years old and live in the Kansas City area. I have always loved knives and wanted to make my own. So, I decided to give it a whirl. I am really excited about doing it! I have a lot of questions. I would appreciate your suggestions to any or all of the questions below.

1. I would like to use a drop point hunting full tang blade blank with a guard. Other than preference, what are the advantages of certain types of metal (SS, Damascus, etc)?

2. I am thinking about either Cocobolo, Goncolo Alves, or Desert Ironwood handle scales. Which would you recommend and why?

3. What type of handle pins should I use for my first knife? Loveless, Corby or Pins you peen out?

4. I have watched some videos on youtube. Most of them aren't real detailed. Do you know of a detailed step-by-step video out there on the web? I am especially looking for a video of how to install the handle pins.

Thanks Guys! Can't wait to make my first knife!

The difference in steels? Well, Stainless is more resistant to rust (but not rust proof), and carbon is not as resistant.
However, a lot of times carbon takes/ holds a better edge.

Question 2.
Out of those choices, I like cocobolo.
It's pretty.
:p

I can't answer questions #3-4.

I would be very interested in seeing your work, and welcome to the Forums!
