Hi Everyone.

My name is Chuck Fogarty. I've been reading this forum for several months and it is excellent. I started getting interested in making knives a few months ago, I made some kit knives, then with the help of the posts in this forum I started getting a little shop set up in my tool shed.

I got a couple of books on knifemaking, and I got the videos from Allen Blade. I got a Grizzly belt grinder, and hopefully below this post is a picture of my first knife. It is actually a scan of the knife my father did on his scanner, so it may not be the best quality.

The knife is made from 1095 that is 1/8" thick. I heat treated the blade with a oxy/MAPP gas torch, and edge quenched it in olive/mineral oil. I blued the blade, and the handle is made from hickory heartwood out of my woodpile. It has a tapered tang that is also blued. I used the hidden epoxy pin technique with JB Weld on the handles. I also made the kydex sheath for it, too.

Reading y'alls posts here has really helped me get all of this accomplished and I would like to say thanks for such a great forum and such helpful attitudes y'all have. This knifemaking is addictive, I'm just today finishing up knives 2 and 3.

Always think of your fellow knife makers as partners in the search for the perfect blade, not as people trying to compete with you and your work!

Thanks for the kind words, y'all. I really appreciate it. I will post pics of 2 & 3 as soon as I can figure out how to get them digitized. My dad did that last pic by laying the knife and sheath on the scanner and putting a pillow case over it. But I had already given him that knife and he lives about 60 miles away. So it may be a while before I can post more pics.

Chuck, that's great! I have a real fondness for tantos, too. Gave your first knife to your Dad! Mine had to wait until number 6 or 8...

Great looking knife, and welcome. Addiction? Yes, but if you have done 2&3 I'm afraid it's to late for you. So keep the pictures coming.

Very nice job. I have really learned to love knives with nicely done wood handles, and yours looks very very nice. Looks like you are off to an outstanding start.

Thanks for all the kind words and compliments on the knife. It has really made my day!

Knifemaking is really fun, you get to play with power tools, sharp things, and fire. When you are done you've got another new knife to play with. It don't get no better than that!

My second knife is a hunting/camp knife that my wife claimed as hers today. Course now she's got no excuse when deer skinnin' time rolls around.

Great post! But this the best:

I know all of you guys are knifemakers, but I'm always interested to see where you get your wood....!!

Good luck Chuck!

Very nice work and design. How many sheaths did you make before one came out that good? I have thrown out more deformed and burnt kydex than I have good. Bruce B

Chuck welcome and that's a very nice knife.
Your Dad is very proud of you and I know how happy he is to add that knife to his collection.

Nice knife and sheath Chuck!
