Hi, I just wanted to introduce myself. I'm new to this, so, please forgive me if I am slow to respond. This is my first chat ever and I'm not too
"surefooted" yet. I'm considering a himalayan imports kukri(khoukri?) and not
quite sure which I should get. This first one will be for using. Any suggestions?

Welcome to Bladeforums, and to Himalayan Imports!

You inadvertently posted in the Archives section, so I'm going to move this to the HI forum itself (not the HI Cantina, which is for non-knife related discussions).

Kukris, or khukuris, are big knives although the handles can seem small to many of us. The best kukri for you would depend on what use you will make of it but also on how big you are.

Anyway, we'll get plenty of responses in the morning!

A nice list of what tasks you want the knife to perform will generate some good recommendations. Do you want a good camp knife, a wood chopper, etc. The size range helps also. Do you want smaller say 12", a large 22" or something in between?

Hello and welcome RUBYEYE! As has been said, what you plan on using it for will be a determining factor. From what I've heard you can't really go wrong with an Ang Khola for all around usefulness, and the smaller versions offer a good blend of packability and chopping power for hiking and backpacking. Sadly I only own a Baby BAS model so far. It's only 9 inches over all so it doesn't have the chopping power of the big boys, but it's still a very functional khukri, great for making walking sticks and for general cutting chores around the house or around camp when I'm out in the woods.

Welcome! To take advantage of the greatness of the khukris, may I suggest a couple of "all rounders" that are not so big and heavy so as to overwhelm but big enough to get the full impact and usefullness of the khuk.

To that end I'd say a British Army Service (BAS) on the small side or a 16.5" or 18" WWII model for a somewhat larger one. If you are relatively small of hand and\or stature, you might try the 16.5" WWII, if you have bigger hands, go with the18" WWII.

I find the WWII to be in between the lighter weight of say a sirupati and the heavy chopper like the Ang Khola.

Welcome RUBYEYE!!. A 15 inch khuk is a good choice to start with and the WWII is hard to beat as a 1st khuk.

I'll have to agree the WW2 is a nice all arounder. I just got this one recently. It's an 18"

Thank you all for your responses. They are just what I'm looking for! If this message seems to be late in coming, my apologies, I'm not always near my computer. Anyway,
I think the BAS WWII or the Ang Khola should be my starting place. Thanks again.
I'll let you know what I get.

Welcome to the boards, Rubyeye:)

It looks like the others have pointed you in the right direction. Be sure to give us your thoughts once you receive your new khukuri. Be careful and check out the safety thread...also, be warned that HI khuks tend to be, um, habit forming;)

Once again, WELCOME!:D
