I've seen other posts here where people will mention some whittling that they've done, e.g., ball-in-cage. I've been getting interested in picking up whittling as a hobby, but I don't know where to start.

Are there any books out there that give the rundown on the various tools out there, how to use these tools, pros/cons of working with different woods, basic projects for a beginner, etc?

Also, any of you experienced whittlers out there, I'd be interested in hearing your advice!

Thanks,

I would be interested in learning more about whittling also.
I remember years ago my dad showing me how a chain was done out of one piece of wood.
Something like that would be fun to try again :)

I love whittling and have only been doing it for a few years. One of the best sources for info is the book Whittling and Woodcarving by E. J. Tangerman. That is all I needed to get started and it is still the book I refer to most. Other Tangerman books are available but this is the best. It covers all aspects of whittling, wood choice, tools, techniques etc.

You just start with a piece of wood and an idea of what you want it to look like. Then you cut away everything that doesn't look like that.

I hope this helps.

(Sorry, I couldn't resist)
