Stumbled upon site while looking for info. Didn’t see a topic for newbie lowlifes so here goes nothing...
6 months ago I hit an estate sale and scored my first edge tool made by Dunn out of Maine. Axe is an really oddball but that’s not the point. Over the course of six months 1 axe has become 20 all scored @ yard & estate sales in and around Rhode Island. The bulk of these resemble a Connecticut pattern by makers like, R. King, Plumb and Collins. Anyhow I’m smart enough to not post idiotic question until I’ve really familiarized myself extensively with the site. After doing that I’m sure I’ll ask a dozen a more newbie questions and will fully expect scathing very sarcastic and cynical responses. Outside of that any tips or advice to get started hoarding axes for the remainder of my life? I love the thought posting photos of my inferior humble beginnings and curious if that’s appropriate? Ok, fire away!

Hey man! Welcome! So the hobby grabbed another poor soul huh?? Haha. Soon your bank account will be empty and your house overrun with edged tools of all sorts. Oh and saws and files, hammers and all kinds of shit! ;)
There's a bunch of good threads. First you should get a membership! It's not much and you get some perks. Look for the "it followed me home" thread. That's where a bunch of us post our new finds. And you can use the search bar to look for specific topics.
If you want to post pictures it's easiest to use an image hosting website and copy n paste from there to here. Look forward to seeing some of your axes! That Dunn edge tool especially...

Thanks! Axe collecting has already broken off into Hatchets, Blacksmith stuff, Adze’s and mauls. While I may have lost my soul I feel so warm and cozy all over when handling the beginnings of my collection. I don’t know Jack shit yet but find the history fascinating. Will figure out photo hosting site ASAP.
I like the pre-WW2 and earlier stuff the best, wondering if there are decent modern 1950+ being made?

Sure! Vaughn, Snow&neally, council tools etc. In 1950 Emerson Stevens was still making axes. Till '64 I believe. Yesteryearstools.com is a good resource. You can learn about some of the most popular brands there.
Yeah there's so much history regarding these tools and their uses. It's a ton of fun! As you already know it seems.. I gotta hit the sack but I'm sure you'll get a bunch of other good advice from the the other members. Welcome aboard mate!

This is one of the best forums I have in which I have participated for cordiality in spite of professional differences in a discussion. I've learned a lot here.

Good to hear all of the above, I’ve had to leave 2 fishing sites due to BS of all kinds.
