I started with a junk upper, I believe it was a colt car15 that was cut down and then somebody pinned a cheap slip on flash hidder to the end, it wiggled and the fit was sloppy so.....why not.

Um, I'm not so sure it's a good idea to post those pics where just anyone can see them.

Ok, for the sake of not going out on a tangent, let's presume you have the SBR tax stamp and all the legal stuff. Now, are you going to recrown the barrel? Have you shot it yet to see how or if accuracy was affected? So that's what, 10" or 12" of barrel now?

Just wondering if you still have enough back pressure to cycle the action, seeing as it's cut directly in front of the gas block?

I'm pretty sure thats a felony :)

It might be... but there is no requirement that we assume that it is. Let's be charitable and assume that Mr. KaBar has all of the necessary paperwork in order and discuss the gun and his project. We'll leave the legal issues to him because he is the one who A) has all of that information, and B) is responsible for any such problems.

I am interested in hearing his reports of the firing the gun.

Couldn't of said it better, very interested to see how it performs, looks real cool

That things going to have some LOUD reports. Sorry, couldn't resist the bad pun. You may need to do a lot of fiddling with the gas system and the buffer weight to get that thing to work properly.

IMHO I believe the gas port has been enlarged already (note the aftermarket adjustable gas block on a otherwise factory colt upper)

I'm going to shoot it today, if it fails I will pull it apart and drill the port to .093, if that fails then I will send it to ADCO and let them install a pistol length gas system in it and make it in to a mini dissipator.

I've already tested accuracy in my basement with a .22 kit, theres no flyers.

You chopped on a Colt?.....That was a bad idea, imo. I mean, sure, it's cool and all but I just don't think that was a great idea. If it's not chopped correctly, your accuracy is going to suffer incredibly. I'd be surprised if it even ran properly, or without a jam every couple rounds. Now, I'm not trying to knock you, but I'm just giving my opinion.

Now, saying all that, it does look pretty cool. I've got a A2 upper like that, and I just can't stand a undeattachable carry handle. If I wanted to waste $200 for a tax stamp to SBR it and make it look like that, I would, but I wouldn't waste it on a A2 upper so that's not going to happen. On top of things, paint job looks good. I like it.

The rate of twist on a barrel cut that short would likely not properly stabilize a bullet down range.Cool paint job but even with a permit that rifle's gonna be a Cop magnet.

I'm pretty sure that you'll need to crown the muzzle to allow for even expulsion of propellant gas as it (and the round) escapes the barrel. A hack saw isn't the best tool for making clean cuts in a barrel. This will affect accuracy and stabilization of the bullet in addition to what remaining twist you have left in the barrel.

Since .22lr is dimensionally smaller than the barrel of your .223, it isn't a good comparison for testing how jacketed 5.56 NATO rounds will come out of the barrel.

You can cut a decent using a carriage bolt with a little fine sandpaper glued on. Chuck it in the drill and go to town

I crowned it with a chucked brass screw.....worked pretty good. Accuracy was not the greatest but it would be good enough to take a man at 100. I'll defiently be sending this upper off for a proper crown job.

I ran 4 mags, no hitches at all.....ran like a champ

Pretty cool. I'd have left 1" and threaded it for a can... that thing must give you at least 10% for hearing loss!
