Hello to all. I’m not new to the forum, but I’m going to contribute more, so I wanted to introduce myself. My name is John, I’m from Virginia, and I’m going to try to sell some of my sheaths on this exceptional forum.
I got into leather work a few years ago. Long story short, I was in an accident and was messed up for a while. I joined this forum when I was out of commission with the intention of getting in to bladesmithing. In the process of learning how to walk again, I realized that if I ever wanted to become a bladesmith, I would have to apprentice somewhere, and time, money, family etc. prevented this, so I joined the leatherworker.net forum and started to learn how to carve leather. I believe it is easier to self teach yourself leather, and if you mess up or make a mistake, you can throw the piece you’re working in the trash which doesn’t cost a lot. If you make a mistake making a blade, you can lose a finger or something like that and it could cost significantly more!
Since you can only make so many leather gifts for friends and family, I decided to try my hand at sheaths. I want to always improve, and the only way to do that is practice, so here I am, starting to make and sell sheaths on the blade forum.
You will see when I post in the very near future that I will design and carve a figure on each of my sheaths. This is what I like to do. I will be making sheaths, and carving images of pretty much anything I want to learn or try. This is the blade forum after all, so the carvings will be skulls, wolves, elk, deer, snakes and other cool stuff like that…no teddy bears or unicorns, unless they are of the evil variety!!!
Attached are pictures of the tools I use. I don’t show my stitching awl, but I do all my stitching by hand. The knife shown is my favorite blade! It’s a William Rose round knife from Philadelphia Pennsylvania. It’s my understanding that they quit making leather knives in the early 1900’s.
Right now I have a Buck 119, Becker BK7 and BK14 that I will be making sheaths for. I plan on using the money I make if I am successful to buy more knives to make sheaths for, at least that’s the story I’m telling my wife!!! Nothing against you kydex guys, but there’s nothing like the smell of leather!
Thanks, and I’ll be talking to you on the forum!
