Introduction/Winkler SAR

I was going to pose this question in another thread but since I need to make introductions, I figured I would start a new one.

First, name is Mike and I am from Hamilton, OH just north of Cincy. I am ex-Navy, not anything cool like SEAL/SWCC/EOD, no I was one of the nerdy Nukes. Also, I used to volunteer at our local fire department but not so much anymore. Currently, I am employed as an electrical engineer. I have a small collection of mass produced knives that I love but I am looking into the world of custom handmade pieces. Which brings me to my question:

I am looking for a piece that will survive through years of outdoor use. This would be used on long term backpacking and mountaineering trips. I have recently been tuned in to Winkler and am seriously looking at the SAR. Any thoughts on this piece or recco's for a different piece?

I look forward to your responses!

Don't know anything about Ryan's work but I've got several pieces from Winkler. I'd give his work the highest recommendation. Tough as nails and he stands behind them.

It only took me 4 years but I have finally moved forward with a Winkler purchase. I am joining our local volunteer fire dept so I thought it fitting to go ahead with the SAR and I added a belt knife as well. Now the waiting game begins :)

Hey, some times it takes as long as it takes.

But I suspect that the wait will be well worth it.

Good on ya, Man.
