So here goes...

I've been lurking on bladeforums for a while and decided to make it official.

Originally from Missouri, I moved to western North Carolina about 8 years ago to go to school for metalsmithing (jewelry).
As an offshoot of the metals program there are blacksmithing classes, and I took all of them.
I have to thank my instructor David Burnette for sharing his amazing knowledge.

Anyway, in those blacksmithing classes I started fooling around with making knives and eventually Damascus.
I was lucky enough to be part of the first ABS Intro class that was held at Haywood Community College in 2008
and have been involved in our hammer-ins and monthly knife club meetings since then.
I am thankful for all of the amazing makers and tinkerers in the knife community who are more than willing
to share information and keep this art alive.

The knives that I make are generally on the smaller side, but I work in real world sizes as well.
I love making Damascus and working with texture, so that comes through in a lot of my work.

I plan on taking part in the Exchange here in the near future and maybe some WIPs here and there.

Thanks for reading and here are some pictures of a few pieces.

2.25" blade / 4.5" overall length
approx 11/16" at the widest / 3/32"ish thick

friction folder
15n20 blade and spacer
copper handle with 316 stainless pins
bronze bushings
leather pouch
4 3/8" open
2 3/4" closed

little bitty hunter
desert ironwood, stainless pins

and this is something i've been playing with lately.
really wanting to go all in with these keyhole/puzzle integrals.
i've made a few the regular way by forge welding "bolsters" on either side of a blade
and cutting the keyhole and fitting the handle, but i wanted to play faster, so i figured one plane would simplify things.
i've got about 5 different configurations of these in process right now, but this is the only one fully finished at the moment.

damascus and african blackwood
approx. 4.5" long

Welcome to the forum.

A horse ...or rather knives...of a different colour. Literally and figuratively.

I like that friction folder. Looks great. Very businesslike. Thats a good thing in my book.

I agree that friction folder is something. I was wonder how you did those scales, then I looked at the rest of the picture, duh. Nice work.

I like the top knife a lot! That hammer texture on the copper is really appealing to me.
The keyhole integral stuff is fascinating, right? Nice to see others playing with that idea...
Welcome!

The friction folder and kiridashi are appealing to me. Will have to keep my eye out for them on the exchange. Good work all around.

Great stuff Shelby!!!

That textured copper really trips my trigger. Are you striking the textured hammer with a press? Or just another hammer, or? I've never worked copper like that.. I've got some texturing dies for the press I've used on steel. You definitely got my wheels turning Shelby.

That little key-hole is freak'n awesome! :)

Right on, definitely a fan of texture hammers and copper...and the kiridashi is a very crisp looking piece! keep up the rad.

Thanks for the compliments everyone.

Nick - I just anneal the copper sheet and hammer the texture in all over, flatten it out with a rawhide mallet and cut out the pieces as needed.

Hey Bill!

Nice first impression. Welcome. :)

Killer stuff!

Welcome to the forum Shelby! You've got some GREAT looking work, thanks for sharing it with us! I really dig that folder...you should be right at home around here:thumbup::thumbup:

Shelby,

Fantastic work! I like the textures on the copper. I tried something like that a couple years back but didn't pull it off nearly as well.

Welcome, can't wait to see more.
