This is my first post to Blade Forums, but I wanted to announce the arrival of my first “real knife”. Before I get to that, allow me to provide some background. Normally, you’ll find me hanging out over on WatchUSeek, but I have taken a recent interest in knives. I have always enjoyed having reasonable quality kitchen knives around and I have always liked to keep them sharp. Back in my university days, when people would come over and use my knives they would exclaim that they are the sharpest they’ve ever used. This summer, I decided to take them to the next level and bought a Spyderco Sharpmaker. My definition of sharp definitely changed, and now I could shave with them.

The next piece of the puzzle happened when I impulse purchased a Gerber Paraframe II one Saturday at Canadian Tire (Saturday shopping at a CT is a Canadian tradition), and I found it really handy to have a knife on hand. I didn’t necessarily carry it every day, but for carrying out random tasks, it was great. The only problem, is I was somewhat disappointed with how sharp I could get it. No matter how careful I was, I could only get the blade to a certain level and no further. I then began to look into knives more carefully, and I began to learn a lot about steels, quality and was introduced to the concept of the EDC knife.

What’s funny is the very first knife on my short-list was the Leek. I then delved heavily into Spyderco (hey, they make a great sharpener, so let’s look at their knives!) and began picking through their lines. I wanted something smallish, but functional, so I began to decide between the Ambitious, Cat, and Dragonfly2. After much debate, I settled on the Dragonfly (it has a legion of loyal followers and VG10 seems like a great steel). I actually ordered it first but had it delivered to the US (US prices on Spyderco are MUCH cheaper - $58.69 vs $90.73) and won’t be able to get it next week at the earliest. After looking at dozen upon dozen EDC knives, youtube videos, I returned to the Leek. I decided to treat myself and order it. Now, I did order it delivered to me in Canada, as I didn’t want to have to explain to a customs officer why a Speedsafe knife is not a switchblade. It arrived today, and I love it. Immediately, it screams quality and it comes very sharp straight out of the box. I think I may be able to tweak the edge a little bit, but it is very sharp from the get-go.

So, like watch collecting, I can see the madness beginning. I am already looking at the ‘next’ knife. The Kershaw Blackwash Cryo II is already whispering to me. I need to slow down a bit, but the world of knives and sharpening is really interesting. I also have my eye on an Edge Pro Apex sharpener.

So, there it is, my first 'real' knife!!

Congrats on a nice little knife. I have a few of them myself and they are addicting!!

Welcome to the forums, I'm sure the kershaw leek will serve you well!
Try to keep a leash on your appetite for more knives :)

I love the leek. Carried one for years and it was also my stepping stone to really serious knife collecting and using. You may like their Skyline model. Its a seriously popular EDC knife.

Thanks for the warm welcome folks! Riz, I have heard that a paddle strop may end up in my stocking this year... if I am a good boy! :) Currently, I just lightly hone using ultrafine stones, but I think the strop will be a much better suited for the task. As I said, the Paraframe II couldn't get very sharp anyway, so the strop wouldn't have done it much good.

On another note - do you strop with paste or no? Most of my sharpening to this point have been with kitchen knifes, and I haven't researched if the pastes are food safe. Any idea off the top of your head? I'm sure I will wash the knifes well, but I have a 15-month son, so I'd rather err on the side of caution.

I dont use paste. Those little blocks of black and green compound are what I use. You load the strop up with it andit is good for a LONG time. You can find lots of videos about how to sharpen and maintain convex edges. The idea is the same for using a strop on flat bevels. They do not appear to leave any residue on the blades.

Welcome to the addiction (and the forums), pharminator! The Leek was my first proper folder as well. It doesn't get carried much these days but it was one heck of a gateway drug. May it serve you well until its inevitable replacement with something bigger, newer, and shinier :D.

Congrats and welcome! Despite all the other knives I have bought SWMBO, her absolute constant carry is her Leek in G-10 with an S30V blade!

As stated, welcome to the addiction. Good to have you aboard - especially because you obviously have photography skills... and we like pics!

The Leek is a nice knife. I bought one for my wife, though I don't think she carries it much.

The Leek was my first serious entry into the knife world, also. Congratulations on a great start, and welcome to the forums!

Thanks so much for the warm welcome to the forum!! So far, I have really enjoyed carrying this little knife. I love the Speedsafe, it's so cool. Pull out the knife *snikt* blade extended. I'll be interested in contrasting it with the Spyderco Dragonfly2 that is on its way to me. I should have it by the weekend, or next week at the latest. I feel as though the D2 will be a more robust blade, and I'll be a lot less worried about snapping its tip than I am with the Leek. That said, I love the assisted open so much it'll be hard to get this out of my pocket!

I don't think you'll be disappointed with the Dragonfly. It's very capable and very portable. I can't think of a better knife in its size range.

Nice! The leek was my first knife over $30. Such a great little knife I now have one in every color available :)
