I spent last summer in Alaska and kept seeing this tool being used by the natives. They were carving bowls, totem poles and boats and I just had to make one when I got home. A friend has been after me for months to make him an adz to complete a carving project he is working on so this is what he is going to get. The wood part of the adz is carved from the trunk of a dogwood tree with just the right limb for the handle. Dogwood is the toughest wood we have here in the SE. The blade is 1095. Fun project.
(I did carve a small bowl but I think I should get this tool to my friend before I get crazy enough to start a totem pole or a boat.)
