Hey guys,

I'm a T-Mobile user and bought a 2G Iphone second hand. I've spent the better part of the weekend trying to get it jailbroken and unlocked to use as a phone.

I was finally able to jailbreak by updating the software and using jailbreakme.com.

Everything was working fine, so I went to cydia and added the blackra1n.com source then installed blacksn0w. That's where everything went wrong. It froze on that screen, and now when I try to restart it, it freezes on the boot up screen with the apple logo, the timer, and three horizontal bars at the top.

Do you have any advice or anywhere I can look?

Thanks for your help.

Connect to your computer and restore the OS via iTunes. Resets everything you've done but it gets you back to step one. Also take a lookie-loo at jailbreakmatrix sometime.

First off, use the dev teams jailbreak, much better than blackra1n. Geohot is a decent jailbreaker, but the dev team is ontop of their game and their redsn0w works great. All the info you need here. I would really advise that you restore and use their jailbreak. You can also add a custom boot and recovery logo of your choosing, and if you want to know what the verbose boot is, it runs the background code that is run while the boot logo is running (boot logo makes booting the iphone pretty). It's neat. do a search for dev team. I know jailbreakme.com is easy to use, but run the actual redsn0w program, it will produce much better results. What O.S. are you on? 4.0 i'm guessing? Using the newest redsn0w will work, i advise on not using the multi tasking, background or battery percentage options during jailbreak for better battery life. They can all be enabled through a program in cydia which uses winterboard. If you want a list of patches and stuff, feel free to ask, i have them all in a txt doc on my comp.

you know much about syncing to a new iTunes? if i sync to a new computer does that wipe everything or just the music?

once i figure that out, i need to move all my junk to a 3G that's got i think the latest OS on it

File>Library>Organize Library. Then click consolidate files & OK. After that, go to your my music folder and copy that folder onto a flash drive or something. Make sure that you back up your ipod/iphone. Transfer that new library to your computer, but what you do is go into itunes and select add folder to library. select the itunes folder on your flash drive and it will put everything back in. Now, when you hook up your i device it will allow you to erase and sync or merge the two libraries. merge them and all will be well IIRC. I did it with my girlfriends and have it done with mine.

Also an original 2G iPhone will not run the new iOs 4.

see, this is the problem. i the computer i hacked/synced my iPhone to is long gone. i don't care about the music, but the contacts and texts, etc... i do care about. if i try to sync to another computer it says it's going to delete everything. i don't know what "everything" is :D

Well, seeing as how it's hacked, why don't you SSH into your phone and retrieve all of the information you want :-). You can literally pull every app, song, etc. out of it through SSH. Download winSCP as an SSH program, go into cydia and search for SSH, download that and make sure it's enabled (download SBsettings if you haven't). Then to login use your ip address (in sb settings main screen) as host name, user name is root and password is alpine. Then login. Keep SBsettings open for the first time you try logging in with SSH. Just do a search online on how to "copy contacts via SSH" or something like that. Let me know if you need any help.

the thing is, i updated it to 3.1.2 or something after hacking it, so it's carrier unlocked, but it's running Apple's software :D

nope.

i guess it's 3.0

i haven't updated since all my friends toasted theirs

the battery seemed to like Apple's version better
