iPhone-->iTouch?

Ok...my roommate gave me his iPhone 3GS when he moved out because he got a new iPhone 4. I do not currently use AT&T and intended to use it only as an iTouch. Everything I see online says I need a SIM in order to do that. I am supposed to be able to insert the SIM, activate, and then remove the SIM and be fine. I was wondering if there was any way around this. I do not have a SIM and obviously my roommate cannot just send me his.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks Y'all

You could go to AT&T and buy the cheapest prepaid SIM card they have ( like $10 maybe?) and put it in your phone. Bring the phone with you to make sure it will work before you pay them.

You can sell that on ebay for about $250, and then just buy a new iPod touch (if thats what you mean by an iTouch, as 'iTouch' is not the name of any of Apple's products). The latest generation iPod touch is leaps-and-bounds better than the iPhone 3GS -- if for no other reason than the Retina display, ability to FaceTime, better battery life, and the fact the its half as thin and a year newer technology.

Alpine is right. If the iPhone 3GS is in great shape, it will sell for a good bit on eBay (although they and PayPal do take a percentage cut of the sale). The latest iPod Touch is a good leap over the 3GS. Use the money towards that.

This is a thought. I was just trying to use the device until I have the time to screw around with fleabay. Personally, I hate them, so I will probably use an FTF sales option like Craigslist. I am still half-debating just switching my contract to AT&T, but I have not put much thought into it yet.

Side note: It will now pick up wireless in my apt, but not anywhere else.
