To be honest with you I was never much of an iPod fan due to its "yuppie-like" image and its price tag was always more than I was willing to spend anyway.

Well it turns out last week just before a business trip the ex-gf buys me a 4G 20GB iPod to keep me company during the trip. I used it for that week but found it a little big to jog with or put in my pocket so I ended up exchanging it for a 2G 4GB mini iPod along with some accessories.

Now I can see myself turning into somewhat of an iPod geek. Cool toy in my books. If you haven't got one...well what are you waiting for? Go and get your ex to get you one! :D

Retun it and exchange it for an iriver 5GB H10 Audio Jukebox. It has FM, FM record, voice record, picture and text viewing and storage, and color screen. The bonus is that the battery is replaceable and it costs a few $$ less. I refused to jump on the iPOd bandwagon. The only reason that iPod gets the recognition is their advertising. There are a few other players that do exactly what the iPod does and more and the iriver H10 is destined to be the iPod killer.

I've had an iPod since version one. Just got an updated one. There's something to be said for a small gizmo that does one thing very well than one that tries to do a lot not so well. Ones that require a PhD to learn how to operate.

Well, the H10 is alot easier to use than the iPod IMHO. Simple controls, simple interface.

In my case the iPod missed the chance to get me on its bandwagon. Back when it was the only truly compact portable mp3-player with plenty of storage space, then I might have gotten one in spite of some features I don´t like, had there not been the non-replaceable battery.

Today the battery issue remains, but there is also a wide selection of alternatives on the market which appeal to me more. So even if Apple comes out with an iPod with a replaceable battery, they would also have to wipe out the current competition to get me back to considering buying one.

Over 2000 songs downloaded on my iPod, 60+ hours of airline travel in the last 3 months, and we love each other like Romeo and Juliet.
We consummated our love with a pair of JVC noise cancelling headphones.
Bliss.

i got my self an ipod shuffle the 2 weeks ago and im loving it. its small and very light!! smaller and lighter then any of my knives thats for sure. so small and light that if and when you drop it mabey it will the ground! becaus most of the time it wont even unplug from the head phones :D
ive droped it about 9 or 10 times (when it was not attached to the head phones) and its barly got a scratch. the worst so far was i was in the gym and had the shuffle in my pocketand sat an 80lb dumbel on it all it did was press the pause button(or so i thaught) later when i got home i noticed the usb plug was a hanging(still playing music the whole time) out a bit i pushed it back in and its still working perfect. i also like the fact that you just plug it directly in to your comps usb port for charging and uploading songs. no cords nothing to carryaround with it
and it was only $150
i would how ever like more options like the screen and fm options as seen on the iriver 5GB H10
mabey even a sattilite radio option
im happy now but i will update when thay get the smaller(shuffle size) players to have larger capacity like 5 and 6 gigs
then all thay need to do is add a Ti pocket clip and thumb studs!!! lmao :D then we would all be hooked!

You may have been joking, but I really wish someone would would start making an mp3-player with the same standards and materials as upper/high-end knives.
Sony did a series in titanium and B&O makes one from steel, but both have 2001-ish specs otherwise and cannot seriously compete with today´s players. And today everything seems to be plastic, silver painted plastic, and aluminum if you´re very lucky.

But the vast majority out there seems to want their players as light and as cheap as possible. :(

i just want to touch on one point with the H10. if you had a lot of songs on it it would take you all day to get through half of them. as ipod users know the click wheel goes through your library really fast, try that on the H10.

the ipod will always be the first, and formost in my book.

Not true. The H10 has a browser feature that is super fast to scroll through as well as a setting to change the scroll speed from slow to normal to fast. I have 1510 songs on my H10 and I can get to a song I want in less than 10 sec. using the fast scroll setting in the browser function.

Whoah, wait a second. Your ex buys you an iPod? Seems like there is something going on here.

Anyway if people are looking for an iPod-like player but don't like the iPod, there are plenty of other MP3 players out there. Some popular alternatives are made by iRiver and Creative - like the H10 mentioned in this thread.

The battery can be replaced by much better 3rd-party models. It's not too hard to do but it would void your warranty, blah blah.

I have to agree - it's utterly absurd that Apple hasn't addressed this issue. Originally their recommendation was to buy a new iPod when the battery fails.

I'll tell you, forget the iPod I would of rather bought Apple stock when they first came out with it .Missed out on that one.

I am happy with my iPod. Generally I don't even use the headphones, I use the iTrip FM transmitter to listen at home and in the car.

I wish it had a longer lasting battery, but for my uses it is rarely a problem.

I will give in to the fact that there probbaly are players out there that are just as good if not better, but the iPod is pretty damn good.

Advertising is definately why it is the #1 player right now. Until some of the other companies start advertising, the general public is going to keep buying iPods. The H10 probably is better, but if 9 out of 10 (and that is being generous) people have never even heard of it, how do they expect it to sell?

ok thanks for clearing that up so i dont give anyone false info

This argument is like telling someone who wants to buy a Sebenza to save their money and buy an Endura with FRN handles. There is more to the pleasure of a piece of equipment than the features and price/function. Aesthetics come into it, as does knowing that Apple makes reliable products.

Chiro has nailed it.
Style, quality, and brand recognition.

I find it a little amusing that guys who will spend $500 on a pocket knife that is used once a month to open an envelope, balk at paying $200 for a state of the art iPod that can be used very waking moment if you want.

I think that MP3 players generally, and iPod in particular are a turning point in Western culture.
Big call I know, but look at the trends.
