This is not a "deal spotting" thread, so lighten up Francis. I'm not pointing anyone to the source for these. If someone is computer savvy enough to be reading this thread, they can probably swing a Google search. Besides, there's probably multiple sources for all I know. The purpose of this thread is to throw cold water on the notion that you are simply "stuck" with a crappy battery from the friendly folks in Kalifornia. You can do something about it. I did!!

I have an 4GB Mini that I use almost daily to listen to audiobooks. The battery crapped out on me. It is famous for doing so and I knew it was coming. It started out as a minor inconvienence (only held a charge for an hour) then became a real hassle (wouldn't hold a charge at all). I actually considered "upgrading" to the newer Nano and dropping a hundred and a half in the process. Glad I didn't.

I purchased a battery "kit" over the internet. This included a couple of screwdrivers that helped with the install. The battery itself is better than the factory battery in that it has double the mAh rating! The install is crazy simple. Do NOT be concerned. If you have even slight skill working with your hands, you will NOT have a problem replacing this battery. And if your Ipod is banged up like mine is, you aren't gonna cry about a couple of pry marks. Yes, you will have some evidence of prying the end covers off. They are glued on. No biggie.

This whole process takes like twenty minutes. The battery comes with a small charge and they want you to completely bleed it off then fully charge it. I could NOT believe how long the battery lasts now. YOWZA!! I'm mobile again! Even when the battery indicator is down to a sliver I can be assured that I still have plenty of runtime. Charging however seems to take a LOT longer now. But hey, with the runtime you get in return it's well worth it.

Long story short... Don't throw your ipod out and don't talk yourself into a needless "upgrade". Twenty bucks vs 150 is a no brainer. Cheers.

Thanks for the tip. Been considering options for my daughter's.

I replaced a broken screen on one of my nanos. Not too hard, but I just remember being nervous as hell as I first opened it up.

That is correct (and a very good point). However a quick check of your link reveals that Apple doesn't offer this service for the Mini. I've also noticed that they don't offer software updates for the Mini either. It's like they want to drop the thing from their memory. Strange. But yeah, if someone is totally freaked out about tackling this on their own they could send it off to Apple. Something like 300% more than the kit costs plus they're nailing you for shipping both ways so it's like 400% more.

This is not rocket science folks. Apple already sold you a POS battery, that's why you're in this situation. Now for 400% more than the market price they want to "help" you by installing ANOTHER pos battery. Er, umkay? :jerkit:

Don't let 'em win! Fix it yerself. It's simple.

Newer, better batteries are coming out all the time. Even if yours isn't dead yet, it might be worth looking into a replacement just for the upped capacity.

I replaced the faceplate of my 5.5 g with a sexy aluminum one from a 6 g (the Classics can't be Rockboxed, yet.) I'm hoping to lay hands on a bigger drive some day, or plug in a SSD if'n ever I win the lottery.
