I have been having some problems with the click wheel on my 4th generation ipod. So I figure that it can't hurt to update the software, right? Well now the ipod has a screen saying that it needs to be connected to an external power source. So i connected it and let it sit all night...the screen is still there. Let it sit all day today...the screen is still there. I tried resetting the ipod twice but the screen still pops up. I don't have the warranty, so having it fixed is out of the question (cheaper to buy another one:rolleyes: ) Is there anything that you know of to try and fix this?

Thanks guys

P.S. Not all of my music is backed up on my computer so even if I could wipe the ipod and start over i really do not want to.

Did you actually connect it to the power pack (which you now need to buy separately)? Or was it just connected using the USB cable?

If you did connect using the power pack then you might just be out of luck.

Erik is right. For the 4th gen Ipod, you've got to connect it to the wall socket with the special converter (not the computer). It doesn't take long for it to update itself, but it won't finalize the software update if you just stay connected to the computer. If that doesn't work and you're in a town with an Apple Store, make an appointment at the Genius Bar and they can tell you exactly what you need (or maybe fix it for free).

Good luck, I can certainly attest to the fact that Ipods can be frustrating when they don't work right.

Update-
Well it was connected to the wall, but i found out that my cord is shot. So after resetting it all those times I finally plugged it in(got a new power cord). But now the ipod will not turn on, charge, or be recognized by the computer. I will leave it off power for 24 hours and try to reset as the Apple website says, but I doubt it will do anything.

P.S. If I take it into the ipod/Apple store can they do/know anything, or do they just send it offsite?

Don't bother with the 'techs' in the Apple Store. I've run into a few knowledgeable ones, but overall they don't know much, and will often give you false information. And they do send off-site, so it's pointless to have them ship your product, then have to go back to the store to pick it up.

Apple's a pretty good company. If you call them at 1800 SOS-APPL, explain what's going on, they should offer to help you out.

If not, try going doing a Google search on iPod Batteries. There are numerous, reputable places that will swap out your battery for a minimal fee--and from what you're describing, I kind of think it's a battery issue.

Either way, call up Apple and see what they'll do for you.

You can get apple batteries on ebay for about $10 with instructions. Apple want about $70 at the apple store
