Ipod mini and water

I accidently dropped my Ipod Mini in the toilet earlier today, and it doesn't seem to lively right now. At first, the screen went blank, then the wheel speaker started clicking away (while still playing music), but was uncontrollable, and eventually makeing sort of a static noise, then the backlight went on for a few minutes. Eventually the light went off and when I touched the Ipod it was very warm. Since then it has cooled down and seems basically dead. Does anyone know what I should do? Would this be covered under standard warranty? I cleaned it out the best I could, and I hope it still comes back alive. :(

Dry it out. You can't open the case on those, can you? It could take two or three days. When it's fully dried out charge it up and it should work fine.

Put it under a lamp so it's warm but not hot, and set a fan blowing air on it, and wait.

I don't have a fan or warm lamp (only fluorescent) here in my dorm room, but for now I will put it on top of my computer monitor. That will warm it up I think.

Oooooh, I am sorry to hear that!! I think you are right, it is dead. I am so sorry!!

Don't panic. It can take days for a keyboard or a watch to dry out; I wouldn't expect an Ipod to dry any faster. Be patient. Sing to yourself while you're waiting ... if you don't know the words, mumble....

Hrmm....Not too sure this one will recover without some help. In most cases, this wouldn't be a big deal. However, I think when the water entered the ipod case, it probably discharged the battery and very possibly roached it. Do as Cougar suggested and let it dry out for several days before attempting to turn it on. Then if it doesn't work, see if you can order a battery. Not too sure on the battery, as I have heard that the ipods don't have batterys that are user replaceable.

Only two people use this toilet, cause we're in a suite, so it's not as nasty as you might think.

I am afraid that this one is almost certainly dead, however. Everything it's doing strongly indicates that it has died. It's not the battery that's dead, though it is run-down. When I plug it in to the computer, it is not recognized, and it will not display anything on the Ipod's screen but the sad Ipod icon (which I believe means that it cannot access the hard drive), and the charging icon. I have been drying it for several days and it shows no sign of coming back to life. Oh well.

I'm not about to take it apart yet. Right now, I am looking into getting it repaired, finding out if it is even worth doing.

Note: I have determined that there is perhaps the slightest glimmer of hope here. I noticed that the play/pause button is not working, and that would perhaps explain why I can't put it into "disk mode." I am going to try putting it on top of the monitor for a few more hours and then seeing if I can get it into disk mode. If I can do that, maybe I'll be able to reformat it and get it working.

I once read of a pro photographer who was at a concert and the security guy took his camera away. When the concert ended he asked for his camera back and the security dude just put his hand in a bucket of water and lifted the camera out. So basically the camera was totalled.

Now, what the photographer did was quite interesting. He waited for the camera to dry and then he went to a high street store and bought exactly the same camera. After that he went back to the store with the spoilt camera saying that there was something wrong with the camera and he wanted a refund. And he got it.

Anyway, the best you can hope for is to let the ipod dry. Most probably you fried the circuit trying to switch it on. But if you're lucky, in a couple of weeks it might just turn on. My wife dropped her cellphone in the toilet and it was busted. She got a new phone but a couple of months later she just fiddled with the old phone and it just switched on.

I ran my LG cell phone through the washing machine twice! The first time I thought it was toast. I took the battery out and let it dry for a day or so (Just Like Cougar is suggesting) and then charged the battery and it worked like new. Then I wound up doing the same thing again but fixed it the same way. So if I were you I would take Cougars advice and give it time to dry out really well before you give up on it. Dont rush it.

You might be able to get a new one if you just take it in to an Apple store and tell them it just stopped working one day. Don't mention the toilet though, that would probably not help you any.

I've already submitted a repair request with serial number, so it is a little late for that kind of shenanigan. I do hope that it will still magically come alive, though.

If it still does'nt work you can try this, get to Home Depot or Lowes go to the Electrical section look for CRC QD Contact Cleaner and CRC 2-26 LIGHT Silcone Spray .They both should have a straw . Lay out some newspaper's attached the straw to the can's use the contact cleaner first , any opening's you can put the staw spray away .Shake the Ipod dry let it sit in a warm area. Try to see if work's . ONLY use 2-26 if you think it's corrding. I've use this for year's with water, coke and coffee drenched Comm.gear#@%NYPD night shift radio operator's

Hi All-

If you write a nice letter to Apple Customer Service explaining what happened, they might be willing to provide you with a new iPod if you send them the damaged hardware. If you're pleased, you'll probably tell a few people...if they do you wrong you'll probably tell everyone you encounter! Big companies like Apple definitely place a value on corporate goodwill.
