Iraqi Knife Laws??

i'd check out the US government traveler website. There might not be anything in there, but it might point you to where the knife laws are.

Go to your superior officer. As an infantryman, my command wouldn't let me carry a Microtech OTF or a 3" BM balisong.

Does any body know anything about them... I'm headed over there as a civy and would like to know?
Watch yourself over there. I would be more worried about explosive devices and firearms in the hands of crazies than I would about knives. What are you going to use the knife for? You may wish to purchase a knife locally to use during your stay. A SAK is always useful as a versatile pocket tool and just about universally legal to carry. If you need large knives for cooking, etc., you may wish to purchase them locally for use during your stay. You will probably get a better price, especially if you offer an Iraqi merchant American greenbacks!:D

As far as pocket carry knives are concerned you should be good with anything customs will allow you to ship. This includes just about any folding knife. I'm unsure what the rules are pertaining to civilians and autos. Of course, what you are allowed to carry will primarily be restricted by what your role is. Are you heading over as a contractor working on one of the FOBs? If so, there is usally a small variety of folders available at the PX depending on which FOB you are at. The variety at JBB, and Liberty (VBC complex) are pretty decent. The others are a bit samller variety.

In 2003 Mosul, the airfield PX had a bunch of CRKTs.

He's going up against an Al Qaeda cell with just his knife and wits.

Seriously, check with your top. Wayne Hensley gave me 2 knives before I left: a large fixed blade and a folder. Of course, I left them in my duffel bag but he rent-a-cops at Arifjan measured the big with a dollar bill and said I was good to go. The guard sd that I couldn't take it (the big knife) into C-Flick (3rd Army HQ) but a pound of coffee took care of that!
I took a chance, although foolish, but I was willing to seek forgiveness than ask permission but you take a chance on losing your blade.
I wasn't going to work in a combat zone without a knife in deference to Dad's famous quote: "when you go into a gun fight with a knife...something has gone wrong somewhere"!!

Sheesh. No OTFs or balis, but a full-auto M4 or M240 and fragmentation grenades are okay right? Somebody please explain to me the line of thinking that leads to that kind of policy.

We were'nt issued any frag, nor could we use our mortars... no 40mm either.

No frag? No mortars or 40mm either? Sheesh. What kind of sissy war is this? What are they sending you in to kill people with? Cream pies?

I guess you're expected to kill the bad guys with kindness. Or give them "free shots" at you first, to keep things fair. :barf:

5.56 and foul language?

I didn't even have the proper armor for half my tour... I was their from the 03-04 tour. Hopefully things are different now.

Moon,
You would SO be surprised!! We were told NOT to load our weapons...on or off the FOB. Thus the reason I had my trusty pocket knife! After I allegedly loaded my weapon, I could throw my pistol at them (we only got 7 rounds) I still had something else to throw!

That's how it was for me. Beyond the initial act of invasion, we never went on any offensives. I never understood that.

Exactly. We are supposed to take ground and whatnot... As an infantryman, my mission was to close with and destroy the enemy by means of close combat. The only close combat I had was more IMO self defense.

Ditto! I did have more of an opportunity to do more "combat" I was an FA-30; Information Operations. We did computer network attack/defense. The only time I got to use my knife, however, was cutting computer cable. Yes, you can do it with a knife if you've been taught by "the master" to sharpen it!

Sounds like soldiers have no reason to be there then. Soldiers are not cops. :barf:

Agreed.
When they were being used as SOLDIERS, they kicked ass with almost no casualties.
Once they started being used as cops/static occupying forces, well, can't win that one, especially when they're not allowed to employ the extra violence necessary to make an occupation work.
