Few months ago I bought Mike Irie Sport 200 from one of our forumites. The price was very reasonable and I like the knife very much.

I would like to find more info about this maker - I do not even know whether this knife is custom or production.

I would like to have also contact info for this maker - I would like to find out if he makes bigger knives than the Sport serie.

Any info would be appreciated.

David

Irie makes fine custom knives with Barry Wood. You can look them up and find their address in the back of any of the Knives Annual books.

I do not live in US and my main source of info is Internet. Could you send me the address?

David

David, be glad to help, Mike is a very nice person, and he promises to catch up with the rest of us and get a computer someday.

His address is

Mike Irie
3002 E. Gunnison St.
Colorado Springs, CO 80909 USA

Phone 719-578-9226

Turns out he and I are the same age and probably went to school together in Hawaii back in 62, third grade, but didn't know it or remember. I met him at the Blade Show this year, but have spoke with him on and off for quite a while now.

Tell him I said Hi!

I met Mike just a little while ago and he took me under his wing and was willing to share the answer to any question I could think of. Mike is a fantastic guy who should probly double the prices on all his knives.
He makes a great knife. You already got his information but I just had to respond. You won't be disappointed with any of his knives.

Thanks for posting this question. I had been looking for a good, yet economical custom knife maker in my area. Turns out Mike Irie is just what I was looking for and he's located within 20 minutes of my office.

I went over to the Wood & Irie shop at lunch today. I am amazed by the quality of the work that they put out. The Sport 200 is a small hunting knife, but he has larger models in his standard repertoire and is perfectly happy making knives per your sketch.

He also makes inexpensive blades for great prices. For example, he had 4" blade-length hunting knife blades, fully finished (ground, drilled, polished, sharpened and heat treated) for $45.00 with ATS-34 or $50.00 for BG-42). These are full tang blades that just need some sort of slab grips epoxeed or screwed on.

A fully custom knife using blade stock of that size would be $200.00 with BG-42 blade and stag slabs for the grips. By fully custom, I mean MY design. He will also make custom blades for you to finish yourself. With ATS-34 his finish is like a mirror and his grinds look like they are done by a robot. He uses a 10" wheel and his hollow grind is so smooth it looks like it's flat ground. BG-42 doesn't take as smooth a finish, but it's tougher and sharper than the ATS-34. He just got in a stock of CPM420V that he hasn't tried before. He also has D2 in stock. He uses a local heat treat outfit that does work for many big knife companies, for example Spyderco.

If you like bigger knives he makes a "military" knife that is like a moderate-sized cross between a bowie knife and a bolo. But, again, he will make things to your sketch.

He doesn't charge nearly enough.

Oops, I think I misquoted the price on Mike's medium hunting knives (models 101, 102, 103). They actually cost less. The basic price is $175.00 with ATS-34 blade and micarta or desert ironwood handle slabs. $5.00 premium for BG-42 and $10.00 premium for stag slabs. Another $35.00 would get you stainless bolsters.

I like to plug Mike's work whenever I can. I've got two Wood/Irie swing lock folders that I am nuts about. I think Mike does the grinding and the blades have some of the most crisp, smooth, and symetrical grind lines that I have seen. Fit and finish are upper eschalon custom quality.

Just a Tip Steve, and those that might be interested in a SwingLocker, Mike said to me at the Blade Show in Atlanta this year he might not be making those any longer, when the materials he has on hand are used up by about next summer, that'll be it.

I have one of Mike's kit knives. I haven't gotten around to putting slabs on it yet. It was a real bargain though. He is also an incredibly friendly guy. He doesn't charge enough, it's true, but don't tell him that!

Them:"What's that clipped to your pocket, a beeper?"
Me:"Uuh....yeah, something like that."

Thanks Gary. He mentioned something like that to me on the phone last summer too. I have an order in for a fancy model A with MOP handle inserts, but he is about six months late in delivering. Maybe he quit working on them. Rats. Better give him another call.

Steve, a call would be worth it, funny you mention MOP as I was telling Mike about the William Henry Lancet that I just got with MOP scales, he groaned audibly, says Pearl is a pain to work with, so it sounds like maybe he hasn't forgotten yours, he's been very busy playing catch up. Good luck with that!

I talked to Mr. Irie this Monday and one of his blades is on its way to my friend in TX who will deliver it for me.

Since he did not have any blade available for immediate delivery (and I was in a hurry since my friend is leaving soon) he offered me one of his personal blades for no additional charge. I cannot wait to have the blade and finish it.

I only wish I knew about this gentleman 2 years ago when I visited Colorado many times on my business trips.

David

PS: And I would like to thank G2 for posting the address and Jeff Clark for FAXing me drawings of the blades.
