"Iron in the Hat" Idea

Dave came up with a good idea in another thread I started (you guys probably wish I'd crawl back under my rock! ;) ) Anyway, the idea that is developing os for makers in this forum to do an "Iron in the Hat" trade. Basically I guess everyone would pledge to contribute a knife, we'd get all the names together, "draw" and whoever you draw you send your knife to. That way you give a knife and you get a knife. I've done this in other capacities before and it worked out pretty cool.

In any case, this sounds like a fun idea, but there are obvious limitations and risks. First of all, you could stand to get a lemon. Secondly, there is a wide variety of makers and skills represented here. I think we could probably all learn from one another, so I'm willing to risk it. Dave suggested a possible theme, but keeping it wide open could be cool, too. I guess some rules would be things like:
1) work must be your own (no kits, production knives, or other makers' stuff)
2) we publish the list in this forum so everyone knows who participated and if someone pulls a fast one, we can trash them.
3) Everyone tries to give a blurb of the work they received and what they think (let's be nice!)...a little review.
4) Maybe set a theme or value limit. By this I mean "Something that would fairly sell for $75-$100" for example. If you choose to surpass this, though, that's your choice, but that keeps you from getting a $10,000 knife in exchange for grinding the end off a piece of steel, wrapping part in shoelaces, and passing it off as a hideout, last-ditch knife!

Maybe this is biting off more than I can chew, but I think this sounds fun. I'm pretty honest about my abilities as a knifemaker. I've made and sold horrid stuff and I've made some pretty nice numbers, too (relatively), but my work is far from a lots of the other people here. From me you can expect a good, simple, but functional knife with a fairly unique style with a great Concealex sheath! :)

Anyone interested or should we kill this idea before it starts trouble?

I'd be interested, but right off bat, have to say same thing, that I'm not up to skills of lots of people up here. But, I can put out a decent, if not stunning, blade. Just be O1 and micarta or oak for now. Again, nothing fancy. Have friend making kydex for me though and does belt loops a little different for an intersting look, have picture of that(which a knife I made that had suprisingly even grinds, good heat treat/temper, but then I messed up the finish on. C'est la vie).

But yeah, anyways, enough babbling. I'm in if y'all don't mind something of my skill level. THink it'd be good to see someone else's work to help guide me. Already got two blades from Scott Fulford on here, and picked up several things to try/tips just from looking at them. And keeping my coworker/friend from stealing them. ;)

I would be interested in doing this but everyone must know that i am a beginner my blade finnishing abilities are o.k. but that my scales need some refineing. if this is okay with everyone i will through my hat in the ring.

Hey Guys,

Go for it. Unless I am mistaken, Tim Lively began the idea for this about a year and a half ago on his forum (www.livelyknives.com) when he did an "Arrowhead in the hat" trade. Since then, I've run a "Knife in the hat" and a "Push knife in the hat" trade for the forum - the latter with a bit less success than the first. We kicked around the "Iron in the Hat" idea for making and swapping tongs a while back but never went for it. These trades, if done right, can be quite a lot of fun. Even when they don't turn out as well as expected - they're kinda hectic, but still fun... :) I've got a terrific arrowhead and one of Tim's knives as a result of these trades. It's a great way for a part time maker without alot of cash to spare to start collecting.

If anyone decides to go ahead and run this, shoot me an e-mail at knifeinthehat@hotmail.com and I'll give you some pointers (having gone through this twice...) on making it a successful swap.

Tim

ONE IMPORTANT THING I FORGOT. No matter what you do with the trade, be sure to stress over and over again that the point of the trade is not to get a knife, but to get everyone working on their skills as knifemakers. When this is emphasized, skill level is irrelevant - the trade is successful if a knifemaker is better at his trade at the end of a swap than the beginning.

Tim

Hey guess what - Count me in! I dig the idea.

One thing about this is that those of us with marginal knifemaking skills are gonna try real hard not to rip off our peers, and will do a good job. I think this is fantastic!

Thanks Steve, You Da Man.

I've made so few knives I can't tell what I'll come up with, but it'll be something I've never done before! :D

Looking forward to it.

true on both accounts ddave. I'm also not sure what I'll come up with, and also gonna tyr my hardest to not disappoint too. THInking I'll make up 2-3(or possibly more) blades for this, and just pick the best one for the iron in hat.

I don't mind "running" it unless someone else has a real burning desire to do so. Being self-employed I can pretty much do what I want when I want, so running the show won't be a problem time-wise for me, at least. But certainly, if someone else wants to do it, let me know and I will gladly pass the reins on. No problemo! I'll email Tim and get to work. Once I get a few things straight I can post a new thread or keep it going in here. We'll set a time line, develop rules and a list, etc, and get it all worked out. Sound cool?

Count me in too! I have been in a couple of these with the Neo Tribal guys, and they are really great fun. Good to see other makers work and to get feedback on your own work. Dang, I'm getting excited thinking about it. I'm in

Okay, guys, let's close this thread, and see the one titled "Knife in the Hat (official sign up)". Thanks!
