Hi all,

I treated myself tonight and saw Iron Man. I was really impressed. Another comic franchise hits the screen (and it looks like it'll be a good run too).

Anyone else see it?

Hven't seen it yet. I was glad to see Robert Downey, Jr. was sober enough (and out of jail long enough) to work again. Always liked his work on the screen.

I'm a huge film and movie buff, so when I'm not posting here I'm over at rottentomatoes.com checking out movie info. Based on their scale of 0%-100% where anything over 60% is "fresh" and anything under is "rotten", Iron Man is stilling at 94% fresh. This makes Iron Man the best reviewed movie of '08 so far!

I should also point out that in addition to being a khuk knut, I am a pretty big nerd and totally geek out when comic book movies make it to the big screen:D The wife and I are gonna catch a showing tonight after I get off work.

If you haven't seen it yet, you should supposedly stay after the credits. Anyone that has followed the Ultimate Marvel line of comics should know that Col. Nick Fury of S.H.I.E.L.D. was modeled after Samuel L. Jackson....Guess who makes a brief cameo as Col. Nick Fury;):D

Sounds good to this old boy. I have two tickets in hand -- one for me and one for my 'not so old' lady (who was a comic book collector in her youth).

94%, hummm?

The "new" Nick Fury was modeled after Samuel L. Jackson. The original, not so much! Not only did he get promoted (from Sgt. Fury) but he also changed race. (I haven't read comics in years but I was a huge comic nerd back in the 70's-80's.)

You're absolutely right:) When Marvel started doing the Ultimate series of stuff, they really changed a lot of character origins around. They did everything from change the origin of Venom from space related to engineer here on earth to change the sexual preferences of some of the characters to give them a little different angle for the 21st century.

The original Nick Fury looks sort of like Frank Castle (Punisher) meets Reed "Mr. Fantastic" Richards with an eyepatch. From what I understand, the guy that came up with the new Fury really wanted to model him along the lines of Sam Jackson. Of course, he asked first. Sam being the cool guy that he is was all for it. I mean, who WOULDN'T want a comic book superhero modeled after them?:D It's only fitting to have Jackson play the actual character as well;)

And now General Nick Fury of the Ultimate series

And just for fun: The Hoff as Nick Fury in a 1998 Made-for-TV movie:D

Dang it... I missed the credits. I made the mistake of getting an XL Mt Dew at the snack bar and had to RUN to the bathroom after the movie was over. Remember Tom Hank's locker room scene in 'A League of Their Own'? Yep... I did my own version :). Staying for the credits wasn't an option .

Now I'm gonna HAVE to go see it again (shucks).

Punisher meets Reed Richards. That's a great description. I was trying to figure out how to describe him and you hit it dead on. He looks like Reed Richards, but a lot tougher, so the pairing fits!

You didn't miss a lot. Maybe 30 seconds worth of dialog, and the credits for this movie were LOOOOOOOOOOOOONG:eek: I thought I was gonna burst as well;)

That said, the movie was absolutely awesome. I'm going to go with popular opinion and say that this could be THE best comic book origin story ever put up on the big screen. The pacing was great, RD Jr as Stark was spot on, the effects were fantastic. The battles were a little on the weak side, but that has always been the director's biggest fault. He's still getting the hang of making an over the top action flick;) However, the STORY actually makes up for this. For the first time in a long time I didn't find myself going, "Yeah, yeah, yeah...whatever. Blow something up, Iron Man." I could have watched Downey as Stark for another hour. For once the alter ego actually outshined the super hero.

Great movie by itself, and a simple must-see if you are a fan of comic book movies of any kind:thumbup:

Very, very cool. The Mrs. and I saw it Friday morning. Robert Downey Jr. was Tony Stark. And Mr. Bridges was evil. Great comic book movie.

watched it last night, loved it !! well balanced, with a solid story, good combination, and getting rare these days :)

Still need to go see it.

I'm fond of the Ultimates adaptations of the classic characters. I also like the trend toward "graphic novel" - where the battles aren't so easy or clear cut, and the conflicts can be as much internal as external.

It is indeed excellent. I believe it is the best super hero movie I've seen- at the very least, equal to Batman Begins.

Robert Downey, Jr. is Tony Stark, and you can't help loving the guy. I gave it 3.5 of 5 stars. (I only gave Man on Fire 3.5, so that's high praise.)
