A design I did a while ago, one of my customers reminded me of in an Email. Just happened to have the template on my bench for an updated Re-Make of the same style blade. Thought you might enjoy seeing it.
Specs:
1/4" hand rubbed Satin finish 5160, double edge quenched and double
tempered. Redwood Burl handle slabs, Blade is 7 1/2" tip to front of
choil, 13" OAl. Balance point is exactly at the front of the guard,
gives just the right blade feel for a fighter.

Double guard is more traditional I guess. I am just really getting hooked on the blade design as it has so many practical features for a fighter.

Just looks like it means business.

It's not just the tradition, a double guard also protects your hand better on a true fighting knife. Probably not that many people carry Bowies as fighting knives anymore, but for those that do a double guard is a must. If the knife is not going to be used or it will be used more as a camp or bush knife, the double guard is not important, but then that is not the most practical blade shape for that kind of knife.

I am a student of modern fighting sytems (both unarmed and knife). Every knife I own is a fighting knife. While a double guard is nice to have, I wouldn't say that it's a must if the knife is not double edged.

Even though it's not my preference, you'll be able to find many knives designed and built for self defense purposes that have no guard.
