Haha, ok, maybe a bit of a strange question but which handle type do you prefer as far as texture goes? Can someone describe Micarta to me? I have no idea how it feels.

I'm assuming Ironwood feels like... wood, right? Does it have any texture peculiarities that I should be aware of?

I'm trying to get some feedback to see which material I would prefer in a handle. I know Ironwood is strong and I've heard Micarta is too. So in that category I should be ok as long as I take care of the Ironwood, right?

haha, as usual, any input will be appreciated. Hope everyone is having a nice night, or day, or whatever :)

Both materials are hard enough that they mostly feel like whatever finish was used on them. I own several knives with each type of handle, but I really don't feel any difference beyond the level of polish that each was given.

I don't have any knives in ironwood but have many in micarta. It actually feels like hardened canvas or linen. Wonderful feel. Secure grip even when wet. Strong as hell. Can't go wrong with micarta.

Just for clarity -
is it Desert Ironwood being discussed - ie: the natural wood variety?
Or some varient of laminated wood like Pakkawood/Dynmondwood?

If it is the natural desert Ironwood - it is indeed a heavy, hard and tough wood - but like any natural wood it can be subject to swelling or shrinkage :o ..... and if not cared for can look tired. But being a natural wood some samples can be stunning looking.

On the other hand - micarta - canvas or linen - can remain tough and functional if neglected or even abused. They can come in a variety of colors and in their way can still be interesting looking - but in the end they are still a manmade and artificial material - more for function than for looks.

As for feel - I think the handle shape and how it fits the hand is more critical (for me) - but the natural desert ironwood has always felt dense/heavy to me - whereas I have some micarta handles that feel light. Thankfully neither canvas nor linen mictartas have that cheap plastic feel - but then I might have been influenced by the knowledge that micarta is supposed to be one of the best materials for a using knife, and have subconsciously found reasons to like their aesthetics.

As always YMMV.

Micarta is great, 'nuff said. Unless you're really into the way Ironwood looks like, go with the former, preferably canvas if the knife is supposed to be a user.
