Just recieved a Charles May knife that I love.I bought it 2nd hand.My question is how tough is desert ironwood? Its very beautiful but how well will it hold up as a hunting knife?
thanks

Why do ya' think they call it IRONwood? Joking! :D

Seriously.
It's practically indestructable.
Dropped an ironwood handled knife once, into a rockpile, scratched the shellac/varnish on the handle, zero damage to wood.Buffed out the scratch.
Back to perfect. :)
You've got a great user handled knife,DI is beautiful as well.

Ironwood is the only wood I ever want on my knives. It's extremely durable, doesn't dent or scratch without on heck of a fight. I also am pretty sure it doesn't warp anywhere near as much as other woods. You pretty much have to try and mess it up.

The only thing to be aware of is that Ironwood darkens a little with exposure to sunlight. If it's going on a knife that's going to be outdoors a lot, those gorgeous exhibition grade pieces of Ironwood are going to be wasted in a few years, when the wood has darkened. Aesthetics aside, Ironwood is an excellent for a knife that will see heavy use.

I love the stuff! But it stinks like the dickens when you work it! Great Wood! Desert Iron Wood and Amboyna are about all I use for woods. Mike
