Irregular Stamping on my Spyderco

After hearing a ridiculously large amount of rave reviews for the gayle bradley I went ahead and ordered one and was very excited to get it, heard great things about the steel and the fit and finish. I just received mine late yesterday after getting in from work and was looking at it and there's this strange stamping on the blade, it's not visible when either fully opened or closed and even though the picture doesn't seem to pick it up there's a perfectly round very slight indentation around the black marking and seems to be the same kind of black and indentation as the stamping is but its shape makes it appear to be more of a chip out of the blade made from a round indentation.

Any idea what exactly this is?

It's not really a matter of bothering me, just curious as to how it happened, is there a pin on the stampers that could have done it or something got trapped in there or was the a blip in the programming when it was getting engraved and the laser added and extra random dot? It seems to have a perfectly round impression in the metal around it also, just seems odd to me is all

That's really all I'm trying to find out, what could have caused it/how it happened.

That was one of my guesses/hopes but I didn't know how commonly they did rockwell tests and wasn't sure if it would turn it black like that if it was from a rockwell test.

That would be awesome if it was from that though :)

Looks like a small flaw in the steel. I have several M4 knives and a few (non-Spyderco) have these at a smaller scale than yours. I can not be certain from just looking at your picture, but that is my guess.

Would I worry about it? No, but technically it could be a flaw and if it concerns you, you should contact Spyderco. They will tell you to send it in for inspection and only then will you know if it is something outside of their specifications.

As I said, I would not worry about it. If it were closer to the edge I might. But I am some random dude on the web who really does not matter in the grand scheme of things. Your feelings are what you need to deal with and act accordingly.

Of the Rc test marks I have seen they are all VERY symmetrical and they appear as a small round depression in the steel. That appears to be darkened and asymmetrical/irregular.

My Gayle Bradley has something similar, although again at a smaller scale than what the OP's has.

I wouldn't worry about it, especially given where it is on the blade.

That looks like a rockwell test to me. It's too round to be an inclusion. The second, smaller mark looks like a circle as well in the second photo. The first photo doesn't show enough due to glare.

Well, I liked the idea of a rockwell test because of the circular (wont show in pictures) indentation that the black mark is part of it's kind of like a ying yang or like it was hit with a pin and then part of the metal chipped off from one edge of the pin. Now I'm just worried that there is an even larger bit of the flake or whatever caused the inclusion in the first place.

I was hoping someone from spyderco would be able to chime in on this and tell me that it is just a marking from something silly or necessary testing in manufaturing, I seem to have one of those inclusion things farther down on the blade itself that is much smaller kind of pockmark that I wouldn't have noticed if it wasn't for the closer examination due to the big one.

I always see people complaining about little defects like this in their knives and think it is silly for them to be bothered by it when they're planning to use the knife, but now I seem to understand it a little bit better, it doesn't really make a difference that it doesn't matter, it's just that there's something wrong with your brand new knife, no matter how superfluous and silly it is takes some of the excitement and joy out of it.
I feel stupid for doing it but I think this one is going to be a return to sender, and try my luck again with another person, I wanted this so much because of the smoothness that was raved about and how sturdy it is (love the smoothness and how tough it feels) but mostly because of what I saw on the edge retention cutting tests and how well m4 ranked, I built it up in my head as this awesome steel of greatness... and now there are flakes in my amazing lightsaber knife.
Hopefully I get the giddy-happy-joyful-new-knifeness that I'm looking for on the second try and get rid of this having to search for imperfections in my knife feeling that I've built up.

I check all my knives thoroughly when i first get them! I learned the hard way. My first Seb I didnt check it over very well and weeks later found a small scratch on the top! I guess I might be picky but when im spending $100 plus on a knife I expect it to be perfect, providing that its brand new! My Gayle does not have any mark like that. It is a beautiful beast!! If you re not happy and ordered a "new" knife see about getting it swapped out. Any good dealer shouldnt give you any crap for wanting a knife without defects! Good luck!

Eh, got it off evil-bay and even though he's a pretty big seller I don't think he's going to do an exchange so I'm going to have to get my money back and get a new one. But hey, not too big of a deal, maybe I'll be able to get one of the higher rc first run ones.

Sometimes it just boils down to it not mattering how little or big the imperfection is. If you are really unhappy than send it back. Spend your money on something that gives you satisfaction. Not everybody is the same when it comes to expectations for a new knife.

Higher rc run ones? That looks more like a tool mark than an actual inclusion or void. Oh well, not like it will impact the function of the knife. If it's not too big of a deal why not just use the knife? It's not a custom, handground, one of a kind. Maybe it is a big deal.
