I'm headed out to Irvine with the girlfriend for a few days. What am I allowed to carry? Length, styles, opening ease? thanks!

I'll be as concise as possible.

Far as State law is concerned, no limit to length on folders, and they can be concealed or carried openly. Assisted Openers count as folders. Fixed blades have to be open carry only no matter the size. Switchblades and balisongs are legal to carry concealed or open so long as the blade is less than 2 inches long (e.g. Pro Tech Runt). For purposes of law, switchblades and balisongs are considered to be the same thing. http://www.leginfo.ca.gov/calaw.html

Orange County has no specific knife laws. http://library.municode.com/index.aspx?clientId=11378&stateId=5&stateName=California

Irvine has no specific knife laws, other than it's illegal to have them at skate parks. That's pretty normal for city municipal codes to be that specific though. http://library.municode.com/HTML/10941/level3/T3_D4_C1.html#T3_D4_C1_s3-4-112

I live in Irvine.

You are good to go with any length as long as it's not an auto, balisong or fixed blade.

I carry a 4" Spyderco Military regularly andhaven't had any issues here.

what does "open carry" on a fixed blade mean? Does that mean some part of the handle or sheath must be visible on my person? I carry a becker necker on my hip, but with an untucked shirt, or wearing a jacket it is not visible. Am I in violation?

Open carry has the same provisions as PC 12025 (e) meaning the open carrying of a firearm suspended from the waistband, in the same way as a hunting knife suspended from the wearers sheath.

still confused...I read PC 12025 as it relates to firearms, but saw nothing about the weapon needing to be visible or outside one's clothing, can you clarify for me please? Thanks all!

How about at UC Irvine? No limit on traditional open folders right?

And this isn't irvine specific but do those length limits refer to the blade length or the cutting edge length?

Thanks :)

Member 65535 carries an SnG to IVC everyday with no issues. The knife laws here are pretty relaxed as long as the knife isn't an auto or fixed, and you are being responsible with it.

am i allowed to have a balisong that is above 2 inches long as long as i dont open carry it or concealed carry it? thats what i plan to do just keep it at home and flip it.thanks

Balisong: You can own it, you just can't carry it out in public.

Fixed blades: You CAN carry it, but it must be in a sheath and be fully exposed. Even though it's technically legal, I wouldn't recommend doing this unless you're camping/hiking.

seen a fixed blade at UCI and plenty of large blades. Doesn't mean it is "okay" to carry it though. The Costco in Irvine appears to have lots of carriers. Once, while getting samples there at a booth, there was a leek, ZT0350, and my Delica.
