Is 10 inches big enough?

My wife keeps telling me that I'm crazy, that 10" is huuuuge , but I'm not sure how it performs...

I have a Double Talon on order, but don't really know what to expect. The only big kin I've handled are a reground 1111 and a stock 1311, I expect the DT to have a completely different feel to it.

Any thoughts or pros and cons of say 9-10" blades vs 11"+? Do you use them for different tasks? Obviously blades like the NMFSH and CGFBM are well regarded, why do you prefer them over something longer?

I can speculate on answers to my own questions, but thought it would be good to get input from others as well.

Thanks!

Welcome! Great question --- and congrats on your current scores.

As for advantages to a 9-10 inch blade --- there's plenty. It really depends on your environment, the weight, and your personal preference.

The ASH-2, Chophouse, NMFSH, CGFBM are much more maneuverable in dense brush where space is limited. It'll be easier to maneuver than a MOAB, MOABOLO, or 1311.

The you have to factor in weight. There are quality 9 inch knives that range from 16 oz to 27 oz. If a 27 oz NMFSH is too much to carry and use for hours -- then look into a ASH-2. If that's too much -- look into a Scrap Yard SYKCO 911 or Chop House Thick Cut.

Then --- and most importantly --- preference. I prefer taller blade that I can use for an extended period of time. For me the CGFBM is my ideal 10 inch blade. It's weight is in the 26 oz range and after I optimized the edge and shoulders -- it chops bigger than it is compared to factory edges of bigger/heavier/longer knives. Find what works for you and thoroughly enjoy it.

For a 10 inch blade the FBM LE is my Favorite-The Moab, MOABOLO, NMFBM, 1311 and soon to be released WTF will probably be your best choice for heavy duty Chopping-Your Double Talon will be plenty of blade to accomplish most tasks-Congrats and good Luck

Thanks for the quick responses guys, I appreciate the input.

I'm thinking with the DT specifically, it should have a pretty neutral feel in hand compared to the forward weight of the Res-C blades I have, while also being heavier overall. I actually do a lot of brush work, and notice a big difference in the handling and manuverability between the reground 1111 (probably closest to a B11) and the 1311. The '13 handles well for it's size, but the 11" is surprisingly more nimble given the absolute difference is only ~2". Hopefully with the .25" thickness the DT will still have plenty of heft to chop with the big dogs while still being fairly agile.

I also ordered the BOOM Parang, but I have no doubt that I'm going to get along fine with that one :)

Maybe a poor decision, but I passed on the WTF. Was concerned with the size and weight being practical for how I use larger blades. No doubt they are going to be sick choppers though.

Lots would say that the basic 10 is the best all around blade there is. If I had to choose just one, it would be an Ergo battle mistress. 9" of fun.

The Battle Saw is an example of a large blade that is very nimble in hand with great ergos...the canvas mic. handles melt in you hand...

Might want more foreward weight for a better thump for chopping, and can be unwieldy in thick undergrowth...

But with a Battle Saw, you've got a pretty versatile one tool option for such a large blade...

And I'm amazed at how many are showing up on the Exchange...a really, really great tool! I will always own at least ONE!

I'm thinking with the design cues the DTBM will be CG FBM-ish. Same blade length and thickness but with the newer SHBM style handle.

Very similar indeed, will probably not be able to tell much difference-The FBM however is approximately .315 and there is a difference at that point

...with the newer SHBM style handle.

This is another question that was rolling around in my head. I thought maybe the Double Talon and D-guard handles were closest to the Bushwacker Mistress. Didn't think of the straight handle.

I have a double talon ordered too, and have been wondering the same thing. Curious to see if it has a choppy or knifey feel to it.

Help me out here oh wiser Hogs of the round trough. ;)
IIRC, the FBM LE's were .315, but the CG's were .25. My Cerakote FBM from the BladeShow Gannza 2015 is .25.

I cannot answer the question with a definite reason why, except to say it is not an LE Version

No...the correct answer is 13" . 13" is always the right answer. 13elieve me.

^This. ;)

The micarta/g10 handled blades always feel different from the res-c options, not better, just different. Too me the thickness of res-c feels like holding a baseball bat the right way while many thick blades with magnum handles feels a little like holding the end of the bat you hit the ball with... not quite that drastic, but it gives you a place to start in your mind.

Yes, CGFBM's are .25"ish with cbt's & coatings except for the very rare non-cbt show versions. FBMLE's are .32"ish full flat ground satin, FFBM's are .32"ish saber ground and usually coated, then there are the odd .27" saber show specials usually in satin/dcbb. That said, the CGFBM & DT/Guard mistress should be fairly similar at .25" thickness.

That's what I was looking for! Thanks Tim!!!
