My Niece in Cali wants a folder to carry when she hikes and camps. She liked my Steel Will Modus of the choices I showed her. Is the Modus with a 3.27" blade length legal in Cali? I doubt she will carry it in her purse, but don't want to see her Uncle get her in trouble.

Yes. CA has no state law governing blade length.

Yes. CA has no state law governing blade length.

However, local cities and counties do.

For example, in San Francisco and Los Angeles, the legal limit is 3 inches. Don't think it'll be an issue if she's just hiking/camping but, if you think you'll have any LEO contact, check the law/ordinances in the cities/counties that your niece will be carrying the knife.

You could bob the knife to comply with local laws. I bobbed this Delica to app 2.75" just because.
I liked it stock and even more so now. Lucky, I guess, sinece its a non-reversible process;)
The tip looks rakish (just my personal opinion of course) and I find it very useful in its current coniguration.

San Francisco, all of Alameda County (Oakland and the East Bay) and Los Angeles have restrictions that limit carry to less than 3 inches.

If the Modus is too long for local restrictions in her area or just to be on the safe side, maybe buy her a Dragonfly or a Delica instead.
Both of them two 'great' small knives, which fight way above their weight/size.
I am a big fan of both (and the UKPK as well for that matter) and use one or the other for tasks almost daily.

I ignore those restrictions.

I have lived in the Los Angeles area now for 48 years. All this crap about "well, it's longer than your palm or 4 inches" is a bunch of bullshit.
Carry what you want! Anything is legal out here except automatics thanks to our Dumbass industry in Hollywood.
I have NEVER been stopped ever, for an exposed pocket clip or fixed blade open carried.
I carry a 4" folder all the time. Cold Steel Swift.

Even though some jurisdictions in California have blade length limits, there are often exceptions specifically referenced in their laws for "legitimate" uses like hiking, camping, etc. In other words, you can carry any size manual folder or openly carried fixed blade when engaged in such activities.

I know that both the Los Angeles county and LA municipality laws regarding blade length limits have exceptions for such activities.
