Is a folder locked open a "fixed blade"?

Hello folks,

I currently live in Kalifornia, where carrying a fixed blade is basically outlawed, and I wonder if I carry a folder that is locked open, is that a "fixed blade"?

Odd laws here, it seems like carrying _any_ fixed blade concealed is a big no-no, but I can carry _any_ size folder concealed legally. (Well, not on a school campus, etc...)

So what if I carry a folder concealed, that happens to be locked open? Am I carrying a concealed folder or a concealed fixed blade?

(Sure wish I could find a good job in Arizona! :-)

Hi ThomasH.

Yes, a folder in the open position is considered a fixed blade, and cannot be concealed here in Ca. If you like a good defensive blade, look at getting a Rekat Sifu, and one of Mike Sastre's sheaths for it. 12" OAL, 5.5" blade, and one of the strongest locks around. When you combine one of Mike's sheaths and a good snap opening, it's not that different from a fixed blade in a sheath.

I sure am glad I don't live in Kalifornia. It seems that they have some very stringent laws on knife carry.

Shootist, yes and no. The length limit by me (Colorado) is 3.5". And this is a place full of ranchers and farmers. Go figure. If I was caught carrying a SIFU around, I'd get a "Go Straight To Jail" card. But SIFUs are OK in California.

Hank's right. That's why I carry a Sifu in one of Mike Sastre's sheaths. :)

Thanks for the info, fellow sufferers. I knew my idea was too good to be true! :-)

I sure like the weather here in Santa Cruz, but the rents and the gun laws are going to drive me "out a here".

I do like being able to carry really big folders, tho'. I hear they are trying to outlaw any knife that "locks open" now. Sheesh, my little blue cub scout knife would be illegal! Maybe it was just "lockbacks" but that's just as stupid. Oh well, I vote, I talk to everyone I can, but the idiots rule!

Thanks again! - Thomas

Hi ThomasH.

Your take on SB274 is close but not quite that bad. For a pretty good and fairly complete state of affairs on this one, read the following threads:

The first one is a great timeline on when Jim March first alerted us to this bill, and the sad state of affairs we were left with at this late date. The second was more of a debriefing and assessment of what happened. The third is the "fix" that we were left with. It appears that depending on implementation, that we might be status quo on this one. Personally, I'd like to see 653 and 12020 blown away, and replaced with laws making it illegal for convicted felons to carry. Now that's empowering for LEO's, and it keeps law abiding citizens out of the focus.
