Hi,

I am planning to buy some really annealed 1095 so that I can work on by files. Anyone has hands-on experiences with Admiral Steel's CRA 1095? Is it soft enough? By the way, I have the experience of working on their HR 1095 and they are too hard to be worked by my Nicholson files.

Thank you very much!

For that amount of carbon you don't want pearlite structure, it's too hard to machine or file. For stock removal you want it in the spherodize annealed condition, which will be much easier to file. HR1095 means hot rolled which will give you pearlite. CRA 1095 means cold rolled and annealed which is what you want.

Thank you very much, Mete!
Is "spherodize annealed" more annealed than "annealed"? Admiral Steel's site says "annealed" while other supplier's site says "spherodize annealed".

Thanks.

the cold rolled 1095 I last got from Admiral Steel was soft
it was 5/32 I believe and it cuts just
about the same as 1/4 brass, to compare it to something.

Seems Admiral's CRA 1095 is the way to go. I will order some.
Thank you!!
