I ordered some Amboyna Burl off e-bay. It comes from Asia. After a couple of weeks I checked the tracking # and it said customs was sending the wood back to the seller. I have bought Amboyna Burl before with no trouble. So, is it all of a sudden on the forbidden list?

Not that I know. Perhaps it was thought to be rosewood or some other banned species and the customs declaration was not specific enough or used the wrong genus.

Be aware when buying from unknown sellers. There are a lot of things sold as Amboyna Burl, but they are common padauk or other woods far less valuable. True amboyna is expensive and somewhat rare. Buying for folks like Ben at Greenberg or the major US sellers is a wise choice.

Thanks, I wish customs knew that. The seller said he would re-send it to me so, maybe this time it will get through customs. I have bought wood before from this dealer and there has never been a problem till now.

No. what happens is customs is not very knowledgeable about the rules they enforce. They see wood, they get suspicious. I had 120 pounds of high quilt Tasmanian blackwood destroyed for being "Wooden stakes"

Its really just the cost of doing business.
