Is anyone besides me throwing original Kukris?

Like several other folks I've talked to, I have tried to throw all sorts of stuff weighted all sorts of ways. I was cleaning out a box of old stuff from back in my scoutmaster days about 1979 and ran across a military grade full tang kukri I used to carry on hikes and as a general camp tool. I was amazed to see that it throws very well no-spin. It is quite heavy and always sticks in deeply. The wooden handles are protected by the no-spin throws and my hands never contact the sharp blade. Has anyone else tried a full weight kukri?

Not sure if it counts, but I throw Cold Steel's Kukri Machete all the time. One of my favorite things to throw.

I appreciate the response! They are great to throw and I throw both regular and magnum Cold Steel Kukris. I was amazed that they would throw well but they do. The military size and weight Nepal made kukri is different in that it probably weighs twice as much but if you can throw one you can throw the other. I had read sometime in the distant past that kukris were used by ghurkas as throwers from time to time. I would never have believed it before trying one.

That is a story and a fallacy. A gurkha would never throw his khukuri. It is his companion, his pride, his national symbol.
Many times they carried family heirlooms into the field, rather than the sometimes crude arsenal issue khukuri.
His khukuri is the one piece of kit he would never be without. To throw his khukuri, would be like throwing away all that he stood for.
As a khukuri is not made for throwing and it often damages them, throwing one is considered abuse.

Very true in countries like Nepal and India, the weapon is not supposed to be thrown unless it is a spear or a javelin or a dart. The Khukri is the symbol of Shakti , the feminine power or ying as it is called in south asian philosophy. Rituals are performed from time to time , blood is offered and applied.

We regard the Khukri more like the extended arm of the God. So when a Gorkha is armed wit ha khukri he psychologically feels complete and ready to fight.

Thanks for the information on culture and the kukri! Good stuff to know. I guess the throwing thing may have come from some old movie etc 30 years ago. I certainly did not mean to be culturally insensitive and hope not to have offended.

Anyway, regarding throwing the Cold Steel ones, yes, they can recoil pretty badly if they hit on the rear side just behind the point. I've actually had to jump one on one occasion. They look and can act like a boomerang. If you hand sharpen a 2" edge on the back spine just behind the point it stops most of the recoil towards the thrower.
