Is anyone crazy enough to take this idea and run with it?

So, I'm a big fan of having ONE of things. That being said, I like it when people can do franken-leeks, blurs, skylines, etc.

Well awhile back after staring at my composite leek for far too long, I came to the realization that there's a Franken-leek yet to be built. Problem is, I just don't know if it's even possible. Secondly on the problem list, at the time, the other half of my franken-leek was a bit of a grail to be found.

Well, they're not so grail-ish right now. Are you all following?

Yes, I want to disassemble my CB Leek (at the brazing line), and then by some means of cutting / shaping, use the spine of a Damascus Leek and then mate the D2 cutting edge to that.

Anyone crazy enough to do this SUPER COMPOSITE MEGA FRANKEN BEAST LEEK?

Or am I purely delusional?

Or both?

I think a microscope and the worlds smallest chisel would do the trick. let me know how that goes for yah :D

I’d say, if you really really really wanted to do it, its possible... you would probably go bankrupt in the process lol

I’ll do it for you, meet me at the end of Park Point in a couple hours.. we can do an in person exchange!!

Not sure how possible that would be. I don't think there is an un-brazing process, so this would be entirely manual (and extraordinarily tedious). It could look pretty sweet though... not entirely unlike the composite blade on the 0777.

Stebo, i've only got the CB Leek right now. AAAnd, i'd have to get another one because I don't want to hack the only one I have apart just yet. And I say the top of Enger Tower.

Does anyone know anything about the brazing process on these blades?

Thanks for the support, Richard.

What's the point in not trying? I could just sit and stare at my knife all day... or try and make something that nobody has done yet.

Defiantly not a kitchen table project. Are you an experienced machinist/welder-braizer?

I feel like you'd need a precision laser cutter to get the shape right. It's not something you'd be able to saw apart. Then, assuming that you've got the perfectly matched pieces, you'd have to weld them together. I'm assuming that they use the copper braze because the two kinds of steel don't naturally mate together. At the end of that, you'd have to redo the heat treat on the blades. I'm not sure what order KAI does the processing on the blade. Assuming that final heat treat comes after all primary grinding is done, that means that the brazing was already done (unless they grind both pieces separately?). So, maybe the spine just has to eat whatever HT the edge gets. Trade secrets of the metallurgists and machinists who work in the promised land of KAI... If you've got the technical know-how and the equipment to do it, I'd say you could try. I wouldn't think warranty will cover this...

I have more experience in stick / mig / tig welding than brazing. That's why I was curous about the brazing process for these from the factory. As far as the shaping of the damascus goes I was thinking something along the lines of a carbide bit on a die grinder, keeping the speed really low so as not to get too hot on the blade.

Folks, I know it's an entirely unlikely candidate for a project. The thread was designed as a "has anyone thought of this, and would anyone ever do it?!" type of question.

Maybe we can get Jimmer to put something in the suggestion box about this.

@SPXTrader, If I managed to make ONE, I'd hammer out 41 more so you could have #42. I'd just have to find an outlet for all the other leftover hacked apart leeks lying around.
