I find myself wanting a Spyderco Military badly. I also am considering the Para 2 in a sprint run configuration. I like the Military better, but think the lock may be better on the Para 2.

My question is, how much difference is their from the the two locks. I had a bad cut about 15 years ago on a Microtech Socom Elite. I had to literally pull the knife out of my bone.

Anyway, do I have anything to worry about with the Spyderco Military liner locks? And this might be redundant because I'm typing on my phone, but which lock is stronger?

Compression lock is stronger, but Spyderco is not microtech. I haven't heard problems within militaries as they are very problem. The worst cuts I have gotten are from locking knives.

Sorry to hear about your Microtech incident. I have a Socom. an LCC and a CMTX5-M; all have the best liner locks I've ever seen. I think a properly designed liner lock
is as good as almost anything you can find..

The Military has been out 15 years. Have you ever seen a report of a lock failure?

I haven't heard of one, much less seen one. Since I became a member in 1999, I haven't spent much time following Spyderco knives. I bet without a doubt there have been several, maybe just not displayed on BF.

Anyway, I will picking up one, along with a Surefire Fury, and some other goods.

If you like the AXIS lock, you might look into the ball bearing lock models like the Manix 2. I seem to very vaguely recall hearing something about the bolt action lock being used on one model as well, but I could be totally off my rocker. And I'm too lazy to research it for you. Just a thought though, from someone else who likes AXIS locks, although I'm not sure why you titled it that, since you're not asking about any AXIS lock knives?

sage 3.... and I wondered the same thing.

Spyderco does the Walker liner lock very well. I can't imagine mine ever failing or slipping.

That being said, if you really like the Axis lock design then you might appreciate the compression lock on the para 2 or the ball bearing lock of the Manix 2 or XL. They work on the same premise as the Axis, where metal is wedged between the tang and stop pins. Very strong design.

I'm a big fan of the Axis lock, partly due to it's ease of opening/closing the knife. You won't get that on the Military or Para, but will get close with the Manix (I didn't think it was as easy as the Axis).

While I've never heard of the lock failing on a Military, I did just read a thread about blade play developing with use. If you want to flame about that, please go to thread where it was said, I'm just the reporter.

I really like the compression lock on the Para (I got the M390 version) and think it's a great knife (as do so many others), but it still wasn't enough to kick my MiniGrip out of my pocket. Axis addiction can be a real buzz kill for EDC variety!

Thanks, I guess I titled it that way because I'm addicted to Axis locks, and am trying to branch out into other locks. Even if it's just for one knife :)

I have been a BM Axis junkie for several years. I've recently decided to branch out to include either a military or paramilitary. After handling both, I chose the para military 2. The lock just seems more robust and less likely to fail.

I'm a huge fan of the axis lock and love it for its speed and strength.

I think you will like either the Manix 2 or Paramilitary best. The compression lock and BB lock are both great designs and very strong. The Millie's liner lock is about as well made as they come but I still feel much more comfortable with a lock that can't be disengaged by the hand during cutting. Also the Compression lock and BB lock are much faster and safer than a liner lock to close.

Instead of going through this whole thread and thanking everyone for their thoughtful input. I will just say thanks to everyone who replied. I have decided to get a para 2 in either a sprint run, or the digital camo. Thanks everyone!
