I have come across this beautiful hand made knife That was supposedly purchased in 1995. It has an 11 1/2" blade and is 17" overall. It is marked J.P.M 1996, Palm Desert, CA. http://claspics.com/653/823545/ clicking on the pics gives a nice enlargement.

I have discovered in other forums that it was almost certainly made by John P McMahon who is listed as a knife maker in Palm Desert CA. at that time, but the trail gets very cold at that point.

It is, in my humble and biased opinion, a superb example of the knife maker's art, and the result of a very high degree of talent, yet this maker seems to have dropped off the radar, if he was ever on it.

Any info on the maker or his knives would be greatly appreciated.

Than you in advance.

you ever get an answer? I have a beautiful knife that I was given by my Aunt and Uncle back in 1994 and would love to get one for my daughter who is in college. (it is a knife that can be carried while walking. )

Hi Elizabeth,

I am assuming YOUR knife was also made by Mr. McMahon? I looked at the current Knives Annuals and this fellow has no more listings (Meaning he has retired or....?)

I sincerely doubt that you will get an answer from the original poster @raccoonbeast. They have not been to the site in OVER five years.

This said, post an image of the knife you have and there is UNDOUBTEDLY someone who would be capable and proud to make you one similar. We can recommend maker's if we have an idea of what you are impressed with.

You will need to use an outside image hosting site. Imgur if you sign up. Google can do it too. Put it on your Drive storage.

Welcome. This is a great sentiment for your daughter.

THANK YOU! And might I say, I love this knife. I know Gerber makes something similar, but there is a beauty and gracefulness, while also being a kind of, "don't even think about it" knife. I love the way it fits in my hand and that it has a little bit of weight to it. Anyone still make this style, with the sheath?

I may have a lead, Mr. McMahon may still be around. A few people have said that he shows up at swap meets, but only sharpens knives.

Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thank you and I hope everyone is safe during this pandemic.

I can see why you like it. Very unique and useful. Stealthy.

Any onlookers know of a current maker to offer similar?

(Great work with a clear photo and hosted on Imgur. That befuddles most. )

It is stealthy-- I live in an urban neighborhood and I usually have it when I walk my (ferocious) shih tzu. I should have posted a pic of the width of the blade, I realized after I posted, it was dirty, bad bad Lizzie, so I will do that today.
