I'm thinking about writing an application to keep track of knife collections. How many of you would be interested in using the app?

If you're interested, I need your help in coming up with a list of features for the app. What sort of data should it keep track of, etc...

I look forward to reading your responses.

Thanks,
Shawn

Will be interesting to see one, but why not just use excel table?

The main reason for me is portability and accessibility. I guess I just like having all the data with me in my phone. If I sell a knife, I can just flag it as sold, and all the data is still there, but it's now in a "SOLD" category for future reference. I'll easily be able to see the total value of my current collection, as well as what I've sold over the years. Being able to quickly check what I paid for a particular knife while on the road, at a show, etc. will come in handy as well.

I think, for me, it comes down to ease of use and access. Not that Excel is difficult to use, just not a slick as I would like, and definitely not easily portable for the road. :)

I'm thinking of adding a "Specifications" tab to contain info such as:

Overall Length
Blade Length
Blade Width (Height???)
Blade Thickness
Blade Material
Blade Grind
Handle Length
Handle Material
Bolster Material
Weight

etc...

I would add:

Manufacturer
Model name
Model number

For folks that rotate their knives a lot:

Selling price
Date of sale

Actually excel is portable enough. There are plenty iphone apps to work with excel tables. Not most comfortable? Agreed... but it can do all the things that you need: have all the specs, paid price, sold price, can sum up total value of collection, move the whole knife line to the sold table etc... Again, I agree that excel is not very comfy on iphone, but the best thing is that it can be easily edited on you PC.

I would love to see your app for iphone. If possible include an option to export/import data to/from excel or at least to tab delimited text file. It can be stored in the same folder as the main app, and we can find this file using iFile, ssh or other software and work with it. That would be awesome.
