Is anyone using 30" belts to sharpen or hone?

New user here. Not really looking to push our products here, I'm just looking to gather some recon info.

We sold a 1x42" 3 wheel unit to a knife sharpening shop recently and they complained they couldn't find 42" belts at HD for utility grinding (lawn mower blades and whatnot.) I didn't really know what to tell him. We didn't design the 1x42 for the guy not willing to purchase belts from an industrial supply house. Most of our customers who purchase our abrasive tools are businesses with McMaster or Fastenal accounts. Is there really a demand out there for 30" belts?

I sharpen all my own stuff at home on my own 1x42 we build so I figured he could make out well with the same unit. I know there cheap 1x30 units out there but I thought they were just used by people like my dad - once a month and with wood.

Yes. Lots of folks (myself included) use the cheapie 1x30 sanders (Harbor freight, etc.) for sharpening and honing. They are quite popular among knife knuts.

Sounds like a business opportunity, carry and sell the belts that fit your machine. :)
(Or at least include a list of suppliers).

I use a Outils Viel and buy most of my belts in bulk. I had to fab some things before I could use it and feel that all of the accessories could be made better.
I would like to learn about other distributers of the 1"x42" machine and belts.

I also don't feel this size grinder should be used for mower blades.

Funny we were thinking about selling consumables but its hard to compete with the "big dawgs" who buy abrasive belts by the ton for resale.

We used to use our 1x42 3-wheel unit in production for a while. Good little all around machine and not terribly expensive to make. When we added our 2x48 3 wheel model into the production shop, it soon became the favorite. But for all around entry level, the 1x42 size is great.

We usually use 1X30" belt machines to sharpen knives (pen thru butchering knives).

For lawn mower blades use quality belts in the range 30 to 40 grit or maybe a tad coarser and you will create tooth picks in a short time, if you are not watching the task at hand. If you are going into law mower blade sharpening look at BurrKing, Magnum, Oregon and others that offer specially designed systems for mower blade sharpening.

A four inch angle grinder also works.

May be impossible to obtain a belt to coarse for mower blades - just turn the RPM's up when using coarse belts and keep the blade moving.
