Hi, im curious how “made in US” works.

if I were to purchase bulk amount of folding knife parts from a Chinese factory, and hand assemble them at my home. What would be the legal verbiage for these knives if I were to sell them?

Made in US? Assembled in US? Designed in US? Hand made in US??

i’ve never seen a product that says “parts made in China, hand assembled in US”.

II cant afford tooling costs to have a factory make parts that are my design. But maybe, if I do this at an old age for fun. what would this be?

thanks!

Generally the wording "Assembled in USA" carries the implication that the parts were sourced elsewhere.
Depending on the source it may or may not be a bad thing though.

Assembled in the US would be the answer. If you designed it you could say "Designed and Assembled in US".
But since you're importing all the parts it won't be "Made in US".
I have seen products (not knives) that are represented as "Assembled in the US" which automatically implies that the parts/components are imported from elsewhere.

China has been the manufacturing source for many products since the mid 1990s. After WWII ended the Cutlery industry, after US costs rose, went to Germany and Italy. And when those costs rose, they went to Japan. When Japan became too costly they turned to China.
Many found the quality and reliability of China manufacture lacking and turned to Taiwan instead. Which has worked out very well for a few US companies. Today the US, while it supports Taiwan, is in in Trade War with China, and more significantly entering a Cold War politically. There are many countries capable of providing the lower cost high quality labor that China provided without the countless issues, problems and baggage that comes with it. There really is no reason why you can not find a factory in the US to manufacture a knife of your design. Or at least in countries that are not US adversaries.

if the market sentiment is largely patriotic.
sellers or marketing would play that up.
that places importers or stuff with imported
parts at a disadvantage.
hence the play on words.
what more for a domestic manufacturing or part assembly.business.
but imo, a domestic brand would be viewed a local enough product though.
reminds me of a certain manufacturing concern.

I think that story shows laws in place with good intent but used by Shysters to earn legal fees.

I once experienced that sort of thing; the product was, of course, Chinese in origin.
I felt cheated for yrs...

I wish I could remember the PRC name. There is one Chinese company that makes knives that are distributed by 4 name brands in the USA. To me it is not important because I am not going to buy too many more knives. If you have a sense of humor, after WW2, a thinking Japanese city changed its name to "USA". It then was successful in selling products made there with the inscription "USA".

Question has been correctly answered.
