recently i got a bushman Bowie, and i really wanna know what steel made of it.
thanks.

It's made of SK-5. Do you think all the websites like BladeHQ and Knifecenter and the Cold Steel webpage that list that info are lying to you or something?

If I recall correctly SK-5 is about on par with 1080. It's a tough steel that takes a good edge. I have one of the Leatherneck knives in SK-5.

i just thought that there is no need to use imported plain carbon steel to make such kind of cheap knife and chinese counter-part of sk5 is T8 , that steel shoud meet CS needs on making tough tools.

Is the Bushman made in Taiwan? If so it probably makes economic sense since
AUS8 already has to be imported from Japan so perhaps adding SK5 doesn't
add too much. T8 is a Chinese made steel I believe and not frequently seen on
Western brand knives. Swords maybe? In any case Cold Steel take their steel selections pretty seriously and no doubt there is a technical spec/cost factor guiding their material choices.

I also thought production was all in Taiwan now. Though, even my Chinese CS has Japanese SK5. The Japanese appear to have a reputation for making very good, very clean steel. Not all steel is made the same, as evidenced by the fact that radioactive Indian (IIRC) steel was turning up in Germany. It seems the recycling process included everything in the junk yard including medical equipment waste. And, CS has a reputation for having very exacting treatment standards for it's steel. It may require equipment only available in certain facilities. I'm not saying Chinese steel is inferior at all. I have no clue how it is.

I assumed it was a case of them buying steel in bulk. It may be more cost effective to just buy a big order of SK-5, then ship some of it to the Chinese factories rather than buy SK-5 for the Japan factories and T8 for the Chinese ones.

I don't think CS are making anything in China anymore. Most are Taiwan, a couple
India, and the SM3 models (plus the Aus8 SRK) in Japan.
