The last SMKW catalog has a new line of Coleman slip joints with AUS-6 blades. Does anyone know if Camillus is making these?

Will Fennell mentioned awhile back that Camillus often can't comment
on who their customers are concerning contract knives. In this particular
case I'd have to say they are not the maker due to the Aus-6 blade steel.
That steel is a Japanese version of 440A which I've never known Camillus
to use. My guess is they were made in Tiawan for SMKW.

Well, it matters to me who makes a particular knife. I like to know if I can. For one thing, knowing who makes a particular knife can be a useful indicator of expected quality, both good or bad, based on reputation. It's not a sure-fire indicator but it can help, at least for me, and probably for others as well. Knowing who the manufacturer is can be particularly helpful if the knife is being mail-ordered without it being personally handled by the buyer. For example: if I was interested in a knife, knowing that it was made by Camillus would suggest, though not guarantee, high quality to me. Reputation counts for something. Yikes!

Tightwad- Thanks, that answer makes sense. It was just wishful thinking that maybe Camillus made 'em.

Marty123- You hit the nail on the head, I'd have to see a 5-blade slip joint before I bought it. Unless it was a Camillus.

Maurice- Sure it was a dumb question. Now go find Will and bother him for a while.:)

Like someone else said, what Camillus may/may not make for other companies is a touchy subject...its like wal-mart brand corn flakes (if you get my drift.)

I am going to now close my mouth. :D

Camillus makes lots and lots of other folks' knives. I always enjoy finding out which ones. Sometimes it takes a little detective work, as some firms are OK with Camillus letting us in on the secret and some are not. Unless I'm mistaken, Coleman purchased Western and it became Coleman-Western... and now of course we know who Western is owned by. Who knows, there may be something to the question.
