YEEEEEEHHHAAWWWWWW!!!!!!!!

It seems mah ship done come in!!!!!

Ya' see, ta make a long story short, I had to go back to security to make the mortgage company happy to approve our home loan. That was a year ago yesterday. Not to give too much away, but it's an agency known for thier body brokering business practices, thier name kinda rhymes with "sphincter fun" and one of them was gettin' a beer when Abe Lincoln was assassinated....

Anyhoo....For the last year I've been forbidden to carry a knife at work (even though I did it anyways)

Well...to make a long story short, I interviewed for a local job in park maintenance, maintaining hiking trails, trailheads, campsites, etc. This is a job which allows the carry of not just a knife, but a fixed blade knife!! JOY!!!!! The Interview went fantastic and by all signs, I've got the job. If for some sick reason I turn out not to get it, that's okay...we'll call it a consolation purchase, but things look REALLY damn good for me.

So...in order to celebrate, it seems only appropriate to pick myself out a nice, purty new lil' fixed blade to carry.

Now here's some parameters:

three and a half to four inch blade. I can fudge a quarter of an inch high, but NOT below 3.5 inches

Carbon/Tool steel blade- I'm really trying to avoid VG-10, 154CM,CPM 440V, etc. I can live with some rust or discoloration.

Utility is first and foremost in blade design. No tantos, or dagger shaped blades

comfy handle for large hands

easy to carry day in and day out

Not too tactical or scary in appearance

More emphasis on cutting efficiency than brute pry bar strength. A spydie Moran would be too thin, and a Chris Reeve is definitely on the high side of thickness

Now I can't decide whether to get a factory knife that can be easily replaced, or a custom. I don't have a trememdous amount to spend, maybe around $200

In the factory department I've considered the Chris Reeve Mountaineer, and the smaller Shadow BM Nimravus Cub, or the REKAT Pikuni, oh..and I've heard rumors of a few BM Outbounders with D2? Where would a person find one of them?

In the Custom department I've primarily been considering a Dozier ARK. Toothpick, Perrin Street Bowie, or perhaps a Greco Baby Whisper

So...there's a few parameters...whaddya suggest??

(remember, 3.5 to 4 inch blade- no Dozier Crossadas, or CS Trailmasters here):D

Thanks for lookin'!

Go with a Busse Active Duty! Blade is 31/2 inches and its about 3/16's thick. Great little knife and it's friendly looking too!

Here is a pic I boosted off the busse forum:eek: The active duty is the one on top.

I'd recommend the Mora 2000. There's few better utility blades, and it carries like a dream.

I like the looks of those fehrman knives, but I don't have one :( I have pretty much spent my knife funds for the 2003 fiscal year, but I am sure he'll still be making them next year. I'll have to get one. Maybe somebody will start a passaround with one, and I could paticipate and WIN IT in the end:rolleyes: :D Oh well, 'till next year.

I think you hit the mark dead-on with Bob Dozier's Arkansas Toothpick. Your comments about cutting over prying and general utility really resonate with his design philosophy. Ask around and see if you can find a dissatisfied Dozier Toothpick owner. :D

Incidentally, before Bob made my Texas #6 he specifically asked about the size of my hands. He wanted to make sure it would fit my grip properly. And boy does it!

My vote is for the Dozier.. I just got a Bob Dozier K-4 straight hunter with black micarta handles and convex blade grind and it is the the sharpest, cuttinest, most comfortable knife I have ever seen or owned. The wilderness sheath carries like a dream, holds the knife solid and draws with ease. This blade goes through wood like butter and I'm not kidding. The blade is 3 5/8" and is all cutting. I have heard a lot of hype about a lot of knives (not any of the above) but this knife can walk the walk and cut the cut....:D

FEATHERSTONE,
Bob does charge extra for the convex grind. I'm not real sure what the going price is now. I have had this knife ordered for a while. Best to call Linda 1-888-823-0023 and ask her. She'll make your day just to talk to such a nice lady. I can tell you that Bob has got the convex grind mastered. IMHO this is cutting perfected...
I have heard nothing but good about Bob's other grind also...

Hey guy, glad to hear you are getting a great job! (one where you work outside and carry a knife) What more could you want?!

If I were in your shoes, (I'll bet you'll see this coming) I'd choose a Rinaldi L.E.O.! It's got an EXCELLENT blade shape (drop point with a beautiful recurve) that will do anything you need it to. The blade stock is not too thick and not too thin - it's perfect to me. It's heat treated by Paul Bos, so you know the heat treat's right! It comes with a nice kydex sheath with strong retention. The G-10 handle has a great feel with absolutely perfect ergonomics. (and I DO have big hands) This knife just feels like it was meant to WORK!

It is simply a knife of excellent quality at a good price. If I could have only one, this would be it.

Yup Antdog...I saw that comin' as soon as I saw yer name....*L*

Hope things have been well in yer neck of the woods!

That is one helluva good lookin' knife. Seems to have held up better than MY favorite fixed blade of the year. (grrr!!!!)

'fraid that' things got too many sexy attention gettin' curves for me to get away with casual carry of though. It LOOKS like the kicka$$ knife that it is. I need more of a "sleeper" Same problem with the Fehrmann.

The Busse however, looks fantastic, an' the Dozier Toothpick is lookin' better all the time. Still haven't checked out the Swamprat Bandicoot.

Still open to suggestions...

Swamp Rat will probably do it for you, at around half your budget.

If you want to go a little on the longer side, check out the Himalayan Imports forum and get a khukuri. If I had any sort of trail maintenance to do, that's what I'd reach for. Then again, I'm a bit biased. :D
