Is cpm-s35vn better then cpm s30v?

Just wondering if CPM-S35VN is BETTER THEN CPM S30V. Like between the Spyderco paramilitary 2/ ZT 0350 or the Spyderco Native 5?

This is like, the hardest thing you could ask besides SNG OR SEBENZA, on this forum.

In before battle of the steel mongers.

It has finer carbide formation and easier machine-ability for the maker. The user won't see any significant difference in use between the two IMO.

Agree. I could not tell the difference in edge retention between the two in side by side comparison testing. And I certainly have not noticed any difference in daily use.

S35VN maybe takes a bit finer edge than S30V. At least it seems so to me and I have heard others say the same.

It's not really better, I couldn't tell any difference in edge retention in my testing so they are very close.

I do think that S35VN sharpens easier than S30V while S30V seems to be more aggresive due to a higher Vanadium content.

Both are good steels.

It's between CPM154 and S30V ! Having EDCed the three I like the S35VN a bit better .

Wait, s30v is equal to cpm 154? Is that what you are saying here? Everywhere I read said the exact opposite. I am confused.

Note: CPM-154 is different then 154CM.
Yes it is. Where people (including knifemakers) get into trouble is when they refer to their steel as CPM-154CM. That designation doesn't exist, or at least not according to the manufacturer. But that's a topic for another conversation.

I think mete meant it is in-between CPM-154 and S30V

Oh, ok. That makes a lot more sense to me. Thank you for the clarification. I see you note there there is a difference between CPM-154 and 154CM. I guess I never knew the differences there either until your post made me google it. Good info here, thanks. One of the best parts of hobbies for me is learning information like this.

That is one of the biggest errors in the knife world being they are 2 completely different steels.

S30V is not in the same league as CPM 154.

CPM 154 is tough to beat at 62 HRC.

S35VN is better on paper. In actual use I doubt anyone could tell the difference. I'm sure a custom maker who pushes the hardness can really make it shine though.

CPM-154 at Rc 62 would outcut S30V, but it won't be tougher or more corrosion resistant.

CPM 154 is very corrosion resistant, it makes for great kitchen or fillet knives. :)

One of the better steels found in Custom knives.

S35V was designed to be a little tougher than S30V, more easy to work with, and about the same in edge retention.

That comes from the people that make it though. I don't have an S35VN yet(have one on order).

From what I've read from Jim, and others that have tested S35VN, it seems that most would not notice much of a difference between the two.
If given the choice I would go with S35VN, but won't really know until I try it.

I still prefer S30V regardless of what I'm hearing. Probably and only because I can't see, feel or hear about a real improvement to the consumer. Everything I know about S35VN I'm being told about since I haven't had much chance to use it enough to form my own opinion and then, that would be with a single MFG and their HT. I sold or traded away all the S35VN knives I have right now. I'll revisit it again when the time comes but until the mystery is resolved and I hear a more consistent opinion, I'm good with the old standby. Plus, I prefer the less shiny blade finish traits of S30V over the shininess of S35VN
