Is CRKT really going to use Carpenter BD1?!

CRKT's new offering from Flavio Ikoma, the "No Time Off" IKBS folder, is listed as having BD1:

It would be a shock if true, and pairing it up with FRN scales seems odd, although the latter could keep the MSRP down to as stated.

I understand BD1 is a "lower-end" of Carpenter's offerings, but it's still a US steel, and therefore, significantly higher cost (and quality) than CRKT's usual offering of Chinese 8Cr13MoV.

They have used some pretty good steels in the past like O-1 or O2, ATS 34, and probably some I can't remember. They have knives made in taiwan and other companies are exporting steel there to use in their own knife production so they either did that or bought extra steel from some other company sent it there. Since those things are usually proprietary information all we can really do is make a guess. They also import Japanese and PRC made steels into Taiwan which doesn't have any large steel production if any at all there. I have also noted PRC has been making some proprietary steels there such as some SK-5, which is a Japanese licensed steel.

That's pretty cool to see more Ikoma designs in better steels. To be honest, I've been eyeing the Fossil for more than a few months. He designs some neat stuff.

CRKT can be kind of hit or miss, but the ones that hit are actually pretty good.

Shame they did that on such a small knife. I wish they had used that steel on the new Terzuola collaboration instead.

Hmmm. I don't own any knives with 8Cr13MoV blades and I don't think I'm going to go out of my way to pick up any knives with Carpenter BD-1 blades. I'm also not convinced that steel made in the US is necessarily better than steel made in China. YMMV.

If the Fossil was in a better steel I would have one already. I love large frame locks. I just can't justify the street price for Chinese 8cr.

Yes indeed, brother. The BT70 is going to need a closer look from me, I think.

There are a couple interesting new CRKT designs coming out, including the one you linked. The problem for me will be price and fit/finish/quality Control. These things have been problems in the past for CRKT. I will need to see some reviews on these blades before seriously considering buying one. Not that I sit around watching reviews all day, in this instance I really need to see if the quality is going to be there for the price. I didn't watch a review for a Sebenza before purchasing one. I knew the quality was worth the price. CRKT can be hit and miss.

Bd1, 8cr, 440c, aus8 are all pretty comparable.

I'm fine with these steels at a certain price point and if the product is quality. Kershaw does a great job of using less expensive steel on interesting well made knives but keeping the price reasonable.

Yeah, I feel that. But I sure would love to waste my day flipping that damn thing.

I agree with everything said here 100%. I'll definitely be watching some reviews and looking HARD at the street price before I spend the money. I haven't bought a CRKT in...hell, I can't remember. I think I picked up a couple of those "eat'n tools" a couple of years ago at a gunshow, because a guy was blowing 'em out for like $4 apiece, but that's about it. I DO like the design of that Terzuola, but if the quality isn't there, I'll pass.

I dont have a problem with the 8cr they use, but that'd be great if they would chose some knife names that werent so ridiculous, that deters me more than anything. However based on the retail price it looks like they really bumped it up because of the cts-bd1, and if thats the case its not worth that much more $ in my opinion.

Oh, and just to add, this looks like an impressive year for knew blades. ZT will get most of my attention when/if those knew designs hit the market. Kershaw has some interesting stuff as well. Cold Steel is upgrading their steel on a lot of knives and has some new stuff that looks exciting. It will be hard if not impossible to fit CRKT in there if the price is not right and out of the question if the quality is not there.
