I live In Kentucky which says any knife other than an ordinary pocket knife or hunting knife is a deadly weapon.

After looking at case law I can safely conclude that my edc blade is a deadly weapon. (3.3 inch AO drop point)

I can also conclude that my knife I keep clipped to my seat belt in my car is a deadly weapon. (3 inch AO drop point with seat belt cutter and glass breaker. Hint: that's why it's on my seat belt)

So my question is are these two considered concealed? The pocket carry is deep carry in my pocket. And though I keep it high enough on my seat belt that it sits just to the side of my lap it could still be hidden by the door.

If anyone knows of any case law that would be appreciated. The last thing I want is a weapon charge on my record while I wait for my concealed weapons permit to go through

it will probably come down to the officer himself. if your pulled over for running a stop sign im sure you you wont get in trouble for that.

if you got a DUI or drug charge and got searched im sure they would tac that on there.

just be smart and stay safe and im sure you will go through life under the radar, in my area i carry i spyderco military alot and its legal but i need a reason to have it on me so it mostly depends on the offices

Alright you being in Kentucky and its laws bring up an interesting question:

How does the Turtle Man get away with carrying his bowie knife everywhere he goes?

To the OP, I don't know Kentucky law so I can't comment on knife legalities there, but I wanted to comment on carrying a knife clipped to your seat belt for emergency use after an accident. I have heard from first responders (cops, EMT's) that this is a bad idea. The reason is, the amount of force that can be generated by a collision, even a seemingly mild collision, can be INTENSE. Any loose item, including a knife clipped to the seat belt, can very easily become a high-velocity projectile that goes bouncing around the inside of the car. A pocket clip might seem like a secure method of attachment, but it's nothing compared to the force of a collision. From what I've heard, collision forces can produce all sorts of strange and astonishing events inside a car.

Here's the advice I was given when it comes to attaching a pocket knife to a seat belt- use a sheath with some form of closure system like a strong snap, quick-release buckle, or velcro, and sew the sheath directly to the seat belt or attach it using a strap with snaps or velcro that goes all the way around the belt, or a strap with a quick-release buckle that goes all the way around the belt. This way the knife will have a greater chance of being there if you need it and will be less likely to go flying. Or you could just put it in the glove compartment.

Thank you for your advice guys

Charlie: he must not carry it concealed. In Kentucky you can have almost any form of weapon on your person without a permit as long as it's clearly visible and concealed with a permit . This includes everything there are not federal bans on such as machine guns or a freaking rocket launcher. I live in a small town so it's not uncommon to see someone with a pistol on their side whenever I go to McDonald's. Same with large hunting knives. I have a buck 119 I often keep on my belt when I'm doing yard work or going fishing to deal with snakes or other animals I don't want close to me.

Killgar. I'll look into that. I hadn't thought of the forces at work when I really need the knife. And the glove box isn't really an option. I drive an 86 Buick Century and it is Big! In order for me to reach the glove box I have to remove the seat belt and one of the main reasons I keep it is to be able to cut a seat belt. No center console either. I'll look into finding a sheath that will fit it and clip to my seat belt though. Great idea and thanks for the advice

Jwblack: I think your right it will probably come down to the officer. When an officer approaches the first thing I do is tell him about the one on the seat belt and why it's there before reaching for my license. I've gotten bad looks but no tickets yet. I guess it helps that I'm always polite, respectful, and that I'm a law abiding citizen. Only thing on my record is a speeding ticket and going the wrong way down a 1 way street

Clipped to the seatbelt, it is in "plain view' to the officer if you get stopped for a traffic offense. Keep the knife concealed in your pocket and you should be OK.
