Is eating bugs, worms and other critters good for health?

There exist some communities scattered in remote parts of the globe who consume worms, bugs and other yucky critters (by our standards).

For the rest of us who live in brick houses, this kind of food fare should not even be considered unless we are stuck in some God forsaken land with no normal food supplies at hand.

We have, at some time or other, heard or read stories of survivors who ate with some relish these "things." From the point of view of dietary habits, are these bugs and worms really good for health?

Some say bamboo worms are delicacies. Some swear certain ants taste just like pistachio nuts. Some even say roasted locusts are real yummy.

Who has the experience to shed more light on this matter?

Your question implies that bugs and whatnot are somehow bad for your health, as opposed to what kind of health benefits they have...

Are they bad for you? No, if.

If you thouroughly cook anything that could contain parasites or other bad stuff. If you stay away from the ones in your garden that are eating your pesticides. If you make sure you bite them before they bite you (Larger ants in particular).

Nothing you'd find in your wandering will be unhealthy in the manner that a Big Mac or a Butterfinger, or a Keg-o-Coke is unhealthy. Some things in nature, believe it or not, are poisonous. Some carry parasites or little microbes that think your body is a great place to live. But barring those little nasties, none of it's gonna hurt you.

That said, I turn into quite a vegetarian when it comes to living off what I can find on or in the ground.
