I just saw a picture of a really nice looking knife on ebay. The seller says the handle is ebony but in the 4 pictures provided it looks more brownish, almost cocobolo in color. Is "Ebony" wood truly black or does it show up as brown under strong lighting?

Is Ebony truly black? (This is a "Duh" question)

Depending on where it comes from, ebony can be completely black, or black with brown streaks. The sap wood is much lighter in color as well. There is a wide range of ebony coloration depending on the exact species, country of origin, and position the piece grew in the tree. Link please and I can tell you more...
